TOP TEN TUESDAY | BOOKS BY MY FAVOURITE AUTHORS I STILL NEED TO READ

This week’s topic was supposed to be “books I’d gladly throw into the ocean,” but I don’t usually continue with books I dislike, and that means I don’t generally read enough to develop a really strong hatred for books. So I couldn’t think of many I’d want to throw into the ocean. So I decided to do a different theme this week instead.

There are some authors I love and can’t bring myself to finish all their books, because then what if there aren’t any more? Others have so many books that I get distracted and keep meaning to go back and read the rest of their books, but never get around to it. These are some of those books.

There are more books than the one I picked for a few of these authors (I’m notably behind on John Irving and Isabel Allende, for example), and I am scheduling this post well in advance so it’s possible I might have gotten to one or two of these by the time it goes up. But I do like to remind myself once in a while that I’ve got some great books just waiting patiently for me to find time for them!

What about you guys? Do you have any books you’ve been saving by favourite authors? Do we share any favourites in common? Have you read any of these? And which book topped your “toss into the ocean” list this week?

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.

The book I haven’t read from one of my favorite authors that sticks out is The Lost Book of the White by Cassandra Clare. It’s not part of the main Shadowhunter books so I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

The only part of a book I thought I’d throw into the ocean was the last 7 chapters of Allegiant.

Yeah, the loosely connected books often don’t feel as urgent! I never read Allegiant because someone spoiled it for me and it didn’t seem like there was much point. Glad I didn’t bother – seems like the right call!

Me too! Also there are authors that were favourites, and whose books I will always count amongst my favourites because I connected strongly with them when I read them. But some of those authors’ more recent works I haven’t been as into – either because I’ve changed or because their work has. So I think there are some I won’t ever circle back to, but will probably always kind of feel like I should…

I think just because an author is your favourite, doesn’t mean you have to read every single book of theirs. There are definitely books my favourite authors have written that I don’t have much interest in, especially their older ones because I’m just not interested in the topic or the book hasn’t aged particularly well.

I have only read her Bean Trees books and her memoir she wrote with her family about living off what they could produce for a year. I enjoyed both, though I found the former does have some problematic elements I wasn’t as aware of when I read it as a younger reader, but that now I’m uncomfortable with. I’ve read part of two of her other non-fiction books and I really loved her thought process and writing. I haven’t made it through any of her other fiction – I’ve tried Flight Behaviour, The Poisonwood Bible and Unsheltered and abandoned them all, though I do intend to try again! So maybe her non-fiction is more my speed!

Thanks – I feel like this was already a topic at some point, but long enough ago that I felt like I could re-visit it without being too boring!

I like your changing of this week’s theme, I definitely forget to read the other works of an author I’ve previously enjoyed. Case in point, Barbara Kingsolver! I read The Lacuna last year which was very intense and well-written, and just realised I haven’t looked into any of her other works!

She’s one I really feel like I haven’t given enough time to. I’ve only finished three of her books (though I’ve tried about five others) and I know I will find more of her work that I love! Oddly I haven’t yet tried The Lacuna, though I’ve had it on my shelf for ages. Maybe I’ll try to find time for that one sometime this year! I find that, particularly in her non-fiction, I really relate to her thought process. There were times when I was listening to one of her books (I think Small wonders or the Homeland one) when it felt like she had found the perfect words for a feeling I’d never been able to express. She’s definitely got something special!

I’ve read her other two books and loved them both for different reasons, so I definitely expect to enjoy this one as well! I’m kind of saving it for when I’ve got a bit less on my plate so I can really focus on it!
