The actual prompt for this week was a TV shows/books/movie that could be about me, but I couldn’t really think of any. So instead, I’m choosing a few characters I’d like to be, either long-term or for a day. People who either have some character trait that I admire or who get to do things I’d like to do.
- Bridie from The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donoghue
I loved this character. She is an orphan who was raised in an orphanage run by the church, I believe. She had no education, no love, no home or family. She didn’t have any skills and had been abused. Her life was small, dark and without much hope. And yet when given even a small opportunity to be of use, she took it, and excelled. She was capable, smart, resilient and kind. She was all these things that many people in better situations struggle to be, without any effort. I have so much admiration for that!
- Amélie in the film of the same name
I love this film. It’s one of my favourite of all time, and mostly because of the main character. She is vulnerable, quiet, sensitive. But she has this uncanny ability to see beauty around her, to understand what people in her life are looking for, and she cares enough to try and bring people joy and love.
- Veronica Mars from the TV show
She’s smart, funny, tough, and does not ever give up.
So there are a few examples of people I’d like to be, though there are many more! What about you guys? Did you come up with a representation of your life in film or print? Are there any characters you’d love to try out being?

Good choices. I’ve never read The Pull of the Stars but I’ve got it on my list.
Thanks! The Pull of the Stars was my first Emma Donoghue, and I was surprised by how much I liked it. It’s an easy book to get through once you’re in it, and the story will make you want to keep going. Plus I really liked a few of the characters, which is always a great bonus!
Great choices!
Thank you!
Bridie is a fantastic pick! What a great character she was.

I know, right? I got so attached… and I won’t say any more in case someone’s reading this who doesn’t know what happens.
Oooh, that’s an interesting spin on the question. I relate to a lot of Martha Wells’ characters — Moon, from the books of the Raksura, for instance.
I have to admit that I’m not familiar with Martha Wells’ characters – I only occasionally dip one tiny toe into the SFF pool! But I’m glad you liked the spin, and thanks for sharing your pick! What about the character do you relate to most?
