I’ve had a great reading week this week. Mostly because of one book, a book that I only recently discovered, but that was exactly what I needed to read right now. Read on to find out which one it was!
Just shelved:
We Are Not Free is an incredibly important book. It deals with the internment camps that were set up to house Japanese Americans during World War II. It’s a piece of history that is, to the best of my knowledge, not taught in schools (we had them here in Canada too, and never learned about them), but that really should be. Particularly with the Stop AAPI Hate movement that has sadly become more and more necessary throughout the course of the pandemic, this is a really important historical chapter to revisit and learn about. I highly recommend this book. You Are Your Best Thing is a collection of writings by well-known Black figures. Their work discusses a wide range of topics and experiences, but in each there’s an open and honest story being told that is meant to give voice to the experiences of Black Americans, in all their endless variety. And finally, The House in the Cerulean Sea. This book. It’s brilliantly written, full of wonderful characters, and even has great messages around the importance of family and acceptance. It made me feel fuzzy and safe and happy in a way I haven’t for a very long time. I never wanted it to end, and yet I couldn’t put it down.
Currently reading:
There’s a good chance I could finish these four in a couple of days if I really put my mind to it, because they’re mostly short and all quick reads. So we’ll see how things go next week! I’m enjoying all of them, and liking the variety they represent.
Up next:
After the success of The House in the Cerulean Sea, I’m so excited to move on to Hail Mary, which came highly recommended – this time by you guys! I read the first page and I’m already thrilled. Gender Outlaw is one I was told about this week by one of my dearest friends, as I’m trying to find more informative LGBTQIAP+ books. My dad mentioned that he’s reading Auntie Poldi, and that it reminds him of Travels with My Aunt, which is one of our favourite books. He says he’s only just started, so there’s a caveat, but I found it on sale for my Kindle, so I figured why not give it a try? And I’ve been hearing about Harold Fry for years now, and mostly good things. I’ve tried to read it a couple of times, and never really got into it. But I want something else that’s going to be a quiet yet heartwarming read. Maybe this will fit the bill.
Alright, that’s it for me! I’d love to hear if you’ve read any of these books, what did you think? Which books did you read this week, and which was your favourite?
