I love bookish characters. They’re some of my favourite people. I particularly like finding them in books. Here are a few of my favourites, real and imaginary.
Aziraphale from Good Omens was the first one who came to mind when I saw this prompt. I loved this book (it’s problematic I’ve been told – I haven’t read it in years – but when I read it it was great) and I adore Aziraphale’s book obsession. Of course 84, Charing Cross Road is in this list. Of course it is. Anne of Green Gables‘ adoration for the written word and how it could transport you out of your (horrible, in her case) life and somewhere magical is something I think many readers see their own love of books in. And then there’s Hermione. I don’t think I need to say anything else about this one.
I love The Uncommon Reader – it’s such a sweet, unassuming book, and it’s all about the Queen learning to love books and disappearing into them. Love, Nina has a few literary characters – the mom is editor of the London Review of Books (I think) and their neighbour is author Alan Bennett (see previous entry). I didn’t love The Bookish Life of Nina Hill, but I did love her job and her relationships with reading. Matilda was my best friend when I was a kid. For real. I didn’t have many people in my life. She helped me feel less alone, and her love of reading encouraged me to keep being me.
Cath from Fangirl is the author of a blog where she publishes fanfic based on her favourite books, I think. (Correct me if I’m wrong; it’s been a minute since I read this one). She had social anxiety, so books were socializing to her. Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird is another who has stuck with me. Again, I don’t remember the details of this book, but I do remember Scout being a reader.
Here are a few more:
So those are some of the books that came to my mind when I saw this prompt. Some I loved, some I didn’t, some stuck with me, some I’ve already all but forgotten. But for better or worse, there are some bookish people or settings in each of these books! I know I’ve forgotten some absolute classics, so I invite you all to share your favourite bookish characters in the comments below – whether or not they’re on my list here as well!

I mean, they kind of have to be, don’t they?
That’s exactly what I thought!
Haha!
Aziraphale is one of my favorites!
Mine too!
I also had Matilda on my list! I didn’t even think about Aziraphale, but now I wish I’d added him!
Haha! Matilda will always hold a special place in my heart for sure.
Quite a selection. 1619 Project is on my TBR list. Here’s mine https://pmprescott.blogspot.com/2022/05/top-10-tuesday.html
It’s so good! Hope you get to it at some point!
I see so many fun books with great bookish characters that I’ve read. Great list!
Thank you!
So many great choices here–some personal favorites of mine, too.
Excellent! Which ones do you love the most?
Anne of Green Gables is a good pick!

Yeah, I always feel like Marilla gets overlooked, but I think she’s a great character!
