This week’s prompt is a school freebie, so I’ve decided to look at some of the books that taught me how to be a better person. I always think they need to teach kids about feelings more in school, and teach them how to understand other people, employ relativism to accept differences, and, above all, to learn empathy and kindness. There are some books that taught me more about human nature and how to be a good person, how to stand up for my beliefs, what it’s like to really suffer, not to underestimate how evil people can be (or how courageous and kind), and how to be someone who at least tries to be brave than any class I ever took in school. These are some of those books.
I’m not going to break down exactly what I got from each of these, because I feel like most are fairly obvious. I also think I encountered each of these at exactly the right moment in my life, and was able to really connect with them because of that timing.
What about you guys? Are there any books that taught you essential things about the world or human nature? Are there any you feel taught you more than school? Any you think really should be added to school reading lists? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
What an interesting tweak of the topic. It is nice to look back on what we learned.
It definitely is. I recently re-read a few books I haven’t read since I was a kid, and it’s really interesting to engage with them where I am now, and to look back and see how they have affected my interests and viewpoints. Childhood reading is so important!
Aww, I love this prompt. Bravo!
Haha thanks! Mostly I just wanted to use the opportunity to bring up some of my all time favourite books again! Ha.
