I’m not super big on defined and concrete goals, as that tends not to go that well. So I haven’t sat down and set up bookish or reading goals for 2023 that are a huge difference from anything in the past. But if I had to define some of the things I’m kind of carrying in the back of my mind, it would probably look a little something like this:
- Try to read some paper books as well as audiobooks
- Keep up with writing my reviews
- Try to participate in at least one round of the BookTube Prize
- Read at least one book that shows up on a prize long or shortlist this year
- Borrow as many books as I can from the library
- Read with my kid every night
- Re-read at least two favourite books
- Read more BIPOC authors
- Participate in some readathons (hopefully Dewey’s)
- Read at least four graphic novels or memoirs
- Read more Canadian authors
We’ll see how it goes, I might abandon some of these or add to them. I’ve also purposely made it low goals (like two re-reads and one prize book) or things I’m already doing (like I always read a mix of authors from different backgrounds, so BIPOC is not a stretch or a new thing for me at all, just something I think is really important and will be continuing). But hey, better easy goals you can definitely meet than lofty ones you continually fall short of, right?
What about you guys? Are you taking a similar approach, or do you have bigger goals? Are you one who can stretch to meet whatever goal you set or someone who needs smaller wins to motivate you to overachieve? Do you have any similar goals to me?
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
I think that it is nice to be flexible with goals. They look good though.
Have a great week!

Thanks! I have a particularly hard time with firm goals unless they’re externally imposed deadlines. I’ve been starting to wonder if I’m neurodivergent in some way, if so maybe that’s part of it. Otherwise I’m just incredibly undisciplined. But I have odd bursts of intense motivation, so I tend to try to ride those as far as they take me!
As a children’s librarian, I applaud your goal to read with your kid every night! 🙂 My One Word for 2023 (Connection) heavily influenced my goals for this year. I thought hard about how I could connect deeply and differently with books, authors, readers and bookish organizations: https://storytimeinthestacks.com/2023/01/17/top-ten-tuesday-2023-bookish-goals/
Good luck with your goals! Happy New Year!

Thank you! We’ve always read a lot – pretty much right from birth – so it’s definitely a huge part of our lives. So far there has been reading every day (there was most days last year as well, it’s just more official as a goal not to miss any nights this year), and it’s going very well! It sounds like you’ve chosen a great goal, particularly coming at this point in the pandemic when we have all been isolated and disconnected from loved ones, friends and community. Also thank you for the work that you do – libraries are so vital, as is helping kids access and find the right books to read. I think you’re a hero.
Reading more BIPOC authors is an awesome goal. I want to do that, too.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
Absolutely. And trying to read a diverse range of different experiences as well – I have several on my shelves I really need to get to this year!
Great list! I hope you get them all done.
Thank you!
I love your library goal! Very cool.

I’m lucky because there’s a pretty good selection of audiobooks to check out. Not the newest ones (we can’t pre-reserve them, so there’s always a crazy long wait list for the new and popular titles), but anything a year or more old is pretty available. It’s a great way to read thrillers (since I’ll only read them once and won’t need a physical or my own audiobook to revisit) or try authors and books I’m not sure I’ll like. So far I’m on my third library audiobook and it’s my fifth book of the year, so it’s going well!
Yes, keeping up with my book reviews and reading mor BIPOC (and POC as well) authors are also something I need to work on. Good luck! My TTT: https://laurieisreading.wordpress.com/2023/01/17/top-ten-tuesday-books-i-expected-more-from-in-2022/
Yeah, I’m very behind on my reviews. I’ve got like a dozen or more leftover from last year I haven’t written yet! Trying to slowly chip away at them… Good luck with your goals, they’re excellent ones!
