I came across this prompt in the archives, and it seemed to be a good one that I don’t think I’ve written about before. It will, however, require a bit of thought. I’ve read and forgotten more characters than people I’ve met in real life, and remembering some of my favourites might be easy, but some that I’d like to actually be related to…. that might take some thinking.
- Helene Hanff. I love her wit, her wry sense of humour, her ability to survive on a knife edge, and her devotion to the written word.
- Bridget Jones. Yes, she’s become a bit of a cliche now, but when I first met her she was a bumbling but genuine person who felt like she could really be out there somewhere with her diary.
- Anne Shirley. I always thought my mum would have been a lot like her when she was young, so I wanted desperately to adopt her.
- Cassandra Mortmain. I mean, anyone who can come up with such a perfect first line of a book must be worth having around.
- Aunt Augusta. The mature yet adventurous aunt in Graham Greene’s classic, Travels with My Aunt. I adore her, and I love how she breaks all the stereotypes of older ladies.
- Jeeves. From Jeeves and Wooster. I’m not very good at the day-to-day stuff of life, and I tend to have trouble making decisions. I’d love an all-knowing and incomparably intelligent person to take me in hand.
- Fred and George Weasley. I mean, let’s face it. They’d be a lot of fun. Plus, if you could survive being their younger sibling, you’d be ready for anything. I’d also love Molly Weasley – she’s such a wonderful mother-figure.
- Trixie Belden. Again, she’s adventurous, fun, not interested in gender stereotypes and definitely won’t let life get boring.
- Augustus Waters. Another character who would totally get my sense of humour, and my habit of using it to deal with difficult situations.
- Matilda. Because of course.
That’s me for this week! I’d love to hear from you guys – would you choose any of the ones on my list? Which characters or authors would you most want to be related to, in what capacity, and why?
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
The Weasley brothers sound both fun and chaotic to have as family.
Here’s my TTT post.
Yeah – I was an only child, so I always craved a little chaos!
Fun topic! I’d love to be part of the Weasley family, personally. They’re just so warm and loving. The twins wouldn’t be easy to live with, but at least they’re good-natured instead of malicious!
Happy TTT!

Me too! I’d much rather substance over wealth any day of the week, and their family has such a varied group of personalities that I feel like there’s always be something interesting going on!
Jeeves would be great to have at your disposal!
Yes – though I do feel as if I’d *think* I had him at my disposal, but really he had ME at HIS disposal! 😉
I agree with all of these! Great topic!
Thank you!
Having Fred and George as family would certainly never be boring! I’d love Matilda as my sister, we could chat about books all the time 🙂

Right? Oh, man, I would have LOVED to have Matilda for a sister. No one got my fascination with reading except my parents, but you know how kids feel when their parents are the only ones who get them, plus they didn’t exactly have time to lounge around reading and discussing books all day! (Now I’m a parent I get why!!)
This is an interesting post about characters. I didn’t do this post either before, because I just could not think of any at that time, lol! I will have to come back to it someday. Have a wonderful day 🌞📚💜
Yeah, it took some thought for sure! And I’m not sure if I’d *actually* want all these characters as family, but they had some characteristics that seemed like they’d be interesting to have around, anyway!
Jeeves! Lord, yes. If nothing else he could shake his head disapprovingly when my beard starts getting unruly. I think Jeeves hated facial hair in general, though….I can’t remember Bertie ever getting away with anything, even that mustache!
HAHAHAHA! Oh, and he would shake his head disapprovingly. I feel like if he were hanging out with me, that’d be his status quo!
Molly Weasley would be the best mother. I feel like she could handle any problem that pops up.
Yes! I completely agree!
That’s such a darling thought about your mum! Anne Shirley is one of my top 10 favorite characters, come to think of it. Your post brought back so many nostalgic memories about reading. 🙂
Yeah, I used to have a hard time making friends, and even the ones I had I often didn’t feel a genuine connection to. But I did to characters in books, and I would dream of being able to hang out with Anne Shirley, because I felt like she would have gotten me!
Helen Hanff was probably a complete handful. She certainly was opinionated about what she wanted to read. I love her book.
Oh I’m sure she was – but then, so am I! 😉
