WEDNESDAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE | A BOOK TROPE I WISH HAPPENED IRL MORE OFTEN

I don’t have a lot of these, because I enjoy reading a lot of memoirs and non-fiction and books that are kind of their own thing. I’m sure there are tropes in them, but that’s never really what I notice these days (I noticed it more when I was reading mostly YA books, as they tend to have more of the same paths). But there is one thing I can think of that I always really enjoy. I love it when someone truly awful gets what’s coming to them. I have a strong sense of fairness, and it is really difficult for me to accept when someone does something sneaky or unproveable and gets away with it, or when justice isn’t served. I know it’s petty and spiteful, but I feel such a rush of satisfaction when someone truly awful is put into the shoes of their victims. There was lots of this in Matilda – one of the reasons I loved it as a child, I expect!

What about you guys? Are there any tropes you look out for and particularly enjoy?

Many years ago, I was in grad school on a campus that had east-west roads on the north and south sides of a very large campus. In the middle, there was just a one way street headed west. While perhaps annoying for some drivers (I didn’t own a car), that’s just life. One day, I saw a car going the wrong way on the one way street (it was backing down it the whole way as if that was better). That really got me because I had had a friend hit by a car on that street by a wrong-way driver. Just as they were approaching the end, where they’d turn on to a two-way N-S street, a police car turned on to the one-way and their police lights went immediately on. Sometimes (rarely) immediate justice is served. That was so many years ago but I still remember it — probably because I see people doing incredibly stupid and illegal things on the road and so often wish for the police car to magically appear.

First of all, I’m so sorry to hear about your friend who was hit by a car going the wrong way. That is horrible, and no wonder it’s upsetting to see people ignoring traffic laws. I’ve often seen cars doing similar things and it always upsets me! I’ve never seen instant justice happen right in front of me though! I imagine it was quite satisfying! Thank you for sharing!
