I’ve been trying very hard over the past couple of years not to spend as much time with my ear to the ground listening out for new books to add to my TBR. It’s hard for me to resist something new and shiny, so the best way to manage my book spending (which needs to be basically nothing) is to just not know what I’m missing. Any books I really really want to experience I look for from the library through Libby or borrow if it’s faster and I can’t wait. Mostly if I do get books these days they’re audiobooks as that’s much cheaper and I’ve got some saved credits. So long story short, I don’t have such a huge list of books I really want to own these days. There are always a few though, and some that I’ve been wanting for a long time but haven’t bought (pats self on back).
Into the Uncut Grass by Trevor Noah
The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates
The Electricity of Every Living Thing by Katherine May
I haven’t yet read any of these, though I have started the first one and love it so much I didn’t want to finish it, and I also feel like I want to be able to mark the pages as I read. Unfortunately so far it’s not available in my country, so it’s on my maybe someday list. I really want the Trevor Noah book because it’s supposed to be in the same vein as The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse which I loved, and as it’s illustrated I feel like it’s one to have in print rather than audio. The Message is one I’m intrigued to read as I’ve enjoyed Ta-Nehisi Coates’ work before (if you haven’t yet read Between the World and Me, please do so at once), but also feel as if I’ll want to mark up, so I’d love a print copy. I’ve read two of Katherine May’s books and find her writing to be soothing and calming, so I enjoy the audio, but I also find there are bits here and there I want to mark, so paper copy is my preference.
The Twat Files by Dawn French
I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You by Miranda Hart
Friends of Dorothy by Sandi Toksvig
I haven’t yet read these three, but I have enjoyed other books by these authors and would love to have them to hand to pick up when I’m in a mood. The first is a cosy fantasy and the prequel to Legends & Lattes, which was one of my favourites of the past year. The other three are by comedians I love, two are memoirs and the other fiction, all of which I expect to enjoy.
Bucket List by Russell Jones
Somewhere Beyond the Sea by T.J. Klune
Scatter Brain by Shaparak Khorsandi
These are four that I have read, but that I enjoyed so much I’d love to add them to my shelves. Because I’ve already read them, however, I won’t be able to justify spending money on print copies at any point in the forseeable future. So definitely on my gifts-I’d-love-to-receive list! (And I recommend all of them.)
That’s my wishlist for this Christmas! What about you guys? Are any of my picks on your list? Any you would now like to add or pick up with any bookish gift cards you may receive? And Happy Holidays to all who celebrate them (happy reading to everyone, including those who don’t)!
