This week’s prompt: Can you recommend a book that catches the spirit of year-end thoughts or generates a sense of nostalgia in you?
This is an interesting thing to consider, because I don’t really have any books that specifically deal with Christmas or the changing over of the year that I come back to each year. So I need to think if there are any that give me kind of a good feeling for this part of the year, even though they’re not meant as December books. I think the one that comes to mind most easily is The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy. There are a few reasons. First, the scenery in it feels wintery. I don’t remember if it’s actually snow, but there’s a lot of white space on the page and it felt like a winter landscape. Second, it has such lovely, introspective, thoughtful content that it’s exactly the kind of book to make me look back over the months (and years) that have passed and feel good about the year ending. It also has some wonderful messages about friendship and caring which, for me, feel like what this season is supposed to mean. And finally, it’s a quick read. This time of year is busy and full of things that drain energy, so I can’t be doing with books that are going to take a lot of time and effort to read. This is easy to read, but leaves you with a lot to think about, and that’s perfect for December.
What about you guys? Do you have seasonal books you like to recommend? Or are you like me and do you have any books that aren’t seasonal, but that still feel right to read around this time of year?
The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly blog link-up that gives participants a different book-related question to ponder each week, and allows them to share their thoughts, find new blogs to follow and connect with new readers. The Hop was originally created by Jennifer at Crazy for Books and is now hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. To see a list of upcoming prompts go here.
I love two seasonal books which I read every year and both are fairly funny: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Robinson and The Shepherd, the Angel, and Walter the Miracle Christmas Dog by Barry.
I haven’t read either of these, but I’m going to look into them! Happy holidays to you!
