LINK-UP | IT’S MONDAY! WHAT ARE YOU READING?

Well, it’s been a better week this week! My allergies are still awful, but I’m dealing with them. We had a great weekend – it’s finally sunny here, so we all got out into the garden and worked on tidying it up, planting a few things and adding some fresh compost to the soil in areas we grow in. It looks much better out there, but mostly I think it was nice for all of us to have a chance to spend some time in the garden for the first time since winter! The fish still seem very happy in their slightly cleaner and now draining pond, and we can even see some of the babies swimming around in there! I’ve started my BookTube Prize reading, though it’s been a bit of a slow start, it’s nice to feel like I’m on the way. I’m also working on crocheting a birthday present for my  kid, which isn’t going exactly as I’d hoped, but I’m enjoying being into a project. Here’s what my week looked like!

Just Shelved

Between the Stops by Sandi Toksvig
Garlic & the Witch by Bree Paulsen
In Ascension by Martin MacInnes

I finished my re-read of Between the Stops that I was listening to in the car last week, and it was as wonderful as I remembered. I love Toksvig’s voice, her wry sense of humour, her ability to find interesting stories from the past and bring them into the present, her perspectives on life and her storytelling. And I just find her very comforting to listen to, something I really needed after having my car broken into! Then on Friday my kid and I decided to have a cosy reading morning, so we cuddled up under blankets on the sofa and read graphic novels. Garlic & the Witch is one my kid read recently and offered to lend me so I could read it as well. It’s a delightful story about growing up, changing bodies and feeling scared of new stages in life. It’s got great messages for kids, but is also just a really sweet story about kindness, love and found family. Next I read In Ascension, the first of the six books I’m judging for the BookTube Prize. I can’t say anything about it until judging is completed, other than to say it feels good to have made a start!

Currently Reading

Brit(ish) by Afua Hirsch
Wildful by Kengo Kurimoto
The Lie of the Land by Amanda Craig

Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton
Behind You Is the Sea by Susan Muaddi Darraj

This week I made a little bit of progress on The Lie of the Land, which I’m still reading in bits and pieces when I’m reading with my kiddo at bedtime. I’m still enjoying it. I didn’t read any of the others I carried over from last week, but I did start the second book in my BookTube Prize TBR, Behind You Is the Sea, and it’s going well so far. Again, I can’t say anything about the content of the book, but I’ll share more when judging is over!

Up Next

Long Island by Colm Tóibín
Gabriel’s Moon by William Boyd
Shy Creatures by Clare Chambers
Sipsworth by Simon van Booy

Nothing new to add to my TBR this week, since this is enough to be going on with! I’ll read these in this order if I have access to them, but it depends on the two I’m waiting for from the library.

That was my week! A better one than last week, though possibly that’s not saying much – but I definitely appreciated the reduction in stress! it’s still sunny here, and my seeds are starting to put up little adorable sprouts, so I’m going to keep getting started on gardening and hopefully find time to plant some more this week!

What about you guys? How was your week? Did you read anything fantastic? Did anyone else have a chance to get outside and do something they enjoy?

A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date. I also link up with The Sunday Salon post each week hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz (and sometimes include some of her content prompts).

Between the Stops sounds like a fun read, and I always want to read books others, especially my kids, recommend. And plants are starting to grow there—here, too—finally our pecan tree.

Yes, it does sound like a better week.

It is really interesting – the whole thing isn’t fun as she discusses some of the hard things she’s experienced, but her tone is just so enjoyable and I like the structure and overall mix of topics in the book! I’m loving that my kid is now such a big reader, and graphic novels are the favourites, so I’m trying to dip a toe in that pond! How lovely to have a pecan tree! It must be lovely in spring!

We also got out in the garden yesterday when the rain finally stopped, and it was wonderful to be out there and to see the new growth 🙂

A cozy morning under the blankets sharing books with your kid sounds great! I miss those days.

Sipsworth is a wonderful novel – hope you enjoy it and your other books.

I’m so glad you got out and had a chance to enjoy spring plants! It was very lovely, and I tried to soak up every second because I know the days of missing it are coming! I’m very lucky, for sure. I remember you saying you enjoyed Sipsworth, and the blurb appeals to me, so I’m looking forward to it (hence why I’m planning to save it for last if the timing works out!).
