So a couple of weeks ago I was browsing Chapters, and I saw a contest to win passes to an advance screening of The Fault In Our Stars in my town. I entered, you know, just for the heck of it. And then promptly forgot all about it.
Then on Monday an email lands in my inbox saying I won something. Having forgotten the contest, I thought it was spam. I was about to delete it when I figured, well, might as well open it just to see what they’re trying to con me into thinking I’ve won this time.
Turns out, I actually did win – and I won something awesome! I got to be one of the first to see the movie based on one of my favourite books. That’s right, I went to see The Fault In Our Stars on the big screen!
In case you live under a rock and aren’t familiar with the movie, watch this:

I don’t want to spoil the movie for anyone, so I won’t say too much about it. I will say that I’m not easy to impress. I am particularly hard on movies based on books, because I tend not to trust my favourite characters in Hollywood hands.
But this movie….it impressed me. Sure, it wasn’t exactly what I imagined as I was reading. And no, Ansel Egort wasn’t what I pictured for Augustus. But you know what? By halfway through this movie the images I had in my head from reading the book had been seamlessly overwritten by the movie – and I didn’t even mind.
Neither, apparently, did anyone else in the theatre. There was clapping, there was laughter… and there were tears. Oh god, were there tears. Never have I been in room with so many people ugly crying simultaneously. Which I think tells you pretty much everything you need to know.
I’d like to thank Chapters and Penguin for the chance to sneak a peek at this film! //<![CDATA[ var sc_project=10144299; var sc_invisible=1; var sc_security="82f610c9"; var scJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://secure." : "http://www."); document.write("”); //]]>
Wait, what? Why didn't I know about this? I'm seriously beginning to question our awesome friendship. Over all though, glad you like it and had fun.

I understand what you mean, that's why I always hope a film based on a book is good because it in a way takes over the image I had before.
well our anniversary is coming up in a few weeks so I might just guilt trip him into taking me, if not I might go see it with a sister. I didn't like Perks, but that's just me.
I'll make sure to waterproof make up, I didn't to Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows part 2 and well, I wasn't a pretty sight when I came out haha.

Like I said in response to Katrin above, they did a really good job of sticking to the book and creating the same feeling and atmosphere to it. So that even though it's not how I pictured it in my mind, because it felt right, it worked.
Aw, that's too bad. Mine went with me, and he liked it even though he's never read the book. I think if he liked Perks of Being a Wallflower or that kind of thing he'd like this. There's definitely some hilarious bits that had us all laughing! But even if you have to go alone, I'd say do it. Might be less embarrassing when you're crying anyway. (Also wear waterproof makeup and take tissues!!)

I'm the same – the more I like a book, the less likely I'll want to see the movie. I was really apprehensive about this one, but I think it turned out beautifully. You can really tell that a lot of thought went into it, and there was a lot of effort to not only stick to the book, but more importantly to create the FEEL of the book. Which, in my opinion, is really important with a book like this! Thanks!

O..M..G. you're right, I am very jealous haha. I'm really happy for you though, I'm also really happy that it was a good adaptation of it. I've been really looking forward to the film but also dreading it in case it turned out wrong, my only hope was knowing that John Green had a lot of say with the movie. I actually happen to think that Shailene Woodley is a talented little actress and it didn't surprise me that she was cast as Hazel considering she was Tris in Divergent too.
I NEED TO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!. Unfortunately my other half is about as manly as they come and the prospect of sitting through this film does not sit well with him, looks like I'm going to be seeing it alone haha, I don't care though.
Happy for you Em π
