BOOK BLOGGER HOP | HOBBIES THAT GO WELL WITH READING

This week’s prompt: January is National Hobby Month. Do you have any pastimes or interests other than reading that go well with your love of books and literature?

Hmmm. I do have various hobbies that I cycle through as the year passes. In spring and summer I garden, in fall and winter I do crafts like knitting and crocheting. But I guess the passtime that most jives with reading and my  love of books is writing. I’ve kept a journal on and off for as long as I can remember, but it’s become more and more sporadic as adulthood has left me less time. Last year I did manage to find a bit more space for my writing, and I found that it helped me a bit to externalize some of the feelings and issues I was dealing with at the time. I used to do creative writing as well, but it’s been decades since I did that. I’d like to at least keep up with my journal this year, though, if time and energy permit.

Do any of you guys journal or write? Do you have any other hobbies that you find jive well with your reading life?

The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly blog link-up that gives participants a different book-related question to ponder each week, and allows them to share their thoughts, find new blogs to follow and connect with new readers. The Hop was originally created by Jennifer at Crazy for Books and is now hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. To see a list of upcoming prompts go here.

Yeah, I feel like reading is one of those hobbies that, if you’re busy, might be the only one there’s time for! Journaling comes and goes for me, but it’s nice to know that I can always go back to it if I’m working through something tough!

I hear ya! Time is always the issue! I don’t keep a diary in the sense of writing what I’m doing each day, it’s more of a loose whatever I feel like writing about thing. Sometimes it’s bits of what I’m doing, sometimes it’s sorting through feelings or writing about a decision I’m struggling to make. Sometimes it’s funny snippets of conversation or something my kid did or said that I want to remember, sometimes it’s a random list of books I want to read or things I need to do! For actually keeping track of life I’m with you – lots and lots of photos, particularly of my kid growing (way too quickly)! I hope you have (had?) a great week too!

I enjoy journaling too for many of the same reasons you do. And like you, I find I don’t do it as often as I would like nowadays, but I do find it so worthwhile when I do. Also like you, I don’t do as much creative writing as I once did. I hope you have a great weekend!

Yeah, it’s hard to find the time when there are actually things going on in life to write about! I don’t journal in the sense of keeping a record of what I’m doing each day, more I use it to write about how I’m feeling, what I’m thinking about, little snippets of stuff my kid has done or said, etc. I even use it for random list making so I don’t lose important ones! Lol!

All of us book bloggers have the same answer, I fear. We all love reading and enjoy writing/blogging. I am impressed with anyone who can crochet or knit. My daughter has taught herself, so maybe I could, too, but I let that idea just slide right by as I contemplate what to do next.

Now that you have finished the serious stuff, how about playing along on a not-so-serious look at a your year in books by joining in my meme which I resurrected from something that was swirling around in 2017. Take a look: My Year in Books Meme

I was lucky because my mum taught me to knit (with very messy beginnings) when I was a kid. Crochet I’m teaching myself and I’ve found that it’s fairly easy to learn from YouTube videos, so if you’re considering learning one by yourself, I’d definitely go with crochet! (Unless, of course, your daughter can teach you which is even better!) But it’s definitely not for everyone. There’s a fair amount of frustration involved in the learning process!

I’m working on my post to add to your Year In Books Meme – thanks for sharing it with me! Busy week, but I’m hoping to have it up by the weekend. I hope you have a good reading week!
