This week’s prompt: What novel would you recommend that blends characteristics of your favorite genre with horror concepts, and why?
I don’t read horror. It’s not my jam, plus I have the spine of a jellyfish when it comes to anything scary or creepy. But there is one book I’ve read that sort of flirted with a few different genres, and I’d say that at times, horror was one of them:
This book was not at all what I thought it would be when I started it. It began with the feel of a hard-boiled detective novel. Then it sort of shifted to a more dramatic moral literary feel, with historic undertones. Then it took a swerve and definitely horror came into it. It shouldn’t have worked. It was an insane mashup. And yet, it ended up being one of the books I was so happy I’d experienced, despite my inability to categorize or accurately describe (see above) it. Everett is a master at twisting things and making important points – largely about racism – into the bargain.
What about you guys? Are there any books you’ve read that weren’t exactly horror, but had that flavour? Any genre mixes you love that involve some of the elements of horror? Any other Everett fans?

I just read a book JAMES by Percival Everett and was so impressed by the writing. It is a masterpiece.
I’m pleased to hear you enjoyed it so much!
