BOOK BLOGGER HOP | HOW TO READ A SERIES WHEN YOU’RE IN YOUR FORTIES

This week’s prompt: Do you prefer to read series one book after another, or can you read other books in between?

I used to read more series, and I used to be able to hold the plot and characters in my head from one until the next was published. But as I’ve gotten older I read fewer series that have a lot of follow-through in terms of plot, and if I do read a series that’s connected I’ll wait until they’re all out and read them either back to back or very close together. I can read books that are technically in a series but are completely independent of one another short of the characters and setting (like the Thursday Murder Club) with gaps, because they don’t lean too heavily on the one that came before. I miss having a better memory, though!

What about you guys? Are you able to hold all those details without them slipping away? Anyone else in middle age finding that they just can’t do it anymore?

The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly blog link-up that gives participants a different book-related question to ponder each week, and allows them to share their thoughts, find new blogs to follow and connect with new readers. The Hop was originally created by Jennifer at Crazy for Books and is now hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. To see a list of upcoming prompts go here.

My baby brain still hasn’t gone 19 months on so I do struggle with memory.

When I had a great book memory I used to read one book after the other purely because it was easier than finding a new book. These days I get sucked into Blog Tours so don’t have time to read a whole series then get annoyed when I can’t remember bits 😂

    Have a great weekend!

I totally hear you. Mine has never really gone back to what it was before, but I think that’s because so much of my brain is now taken up by parenting and the related responsibilities, so there just isn’t enough space left for all the stuff I used to keep in there!

I think the majority of the series I read are made up of books that are fairly self-contained, which make it easier to stretch out and read other books in between. I do enjoy the more connected series as well though–and agree, those can be harder to read farther apart. I hope you have a great weekend!
