BOOKER PRIZE 2019 | LONGLIST

 

After a year of waiting, it’s finally Booker Prize season again! The 2019 longlist has just been announced and includes a “Booker’s Dozen” – thirteen books. Some of you may remember the furor last year’s longlist brought about on account of the inclusion of a thriller and a graphic novel. This year’s list is being termed a return to a more traditional Booker list, with only a couple of genuine surprises on it. So without further ado, let’s do a quick rundown of this year’s longlist:

The Testaments – Margaret Atwood

In this brilliant sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, acclaimed author Margaret Atwood answers the questions that have tantalized readers for decades.

When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her—freedom, prison or death.

With The Testaments, the wait is over.

Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story fifteen years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.

Night Boat to Tangier – Kevin Barry

My Sister the Serial Killer – Oyinkan Braithwaite

She should probably go to the police for the good of the menfolk of Nigeria, but she loves her sister and, as they say, family always comes first. Until, that is, Ayoola starts dating the doctor where Korede works as a nurse. Korede’s long been in love with him, and isn’t prepared to see him wind up with a knife in his back: but to save one would mean sacrificing the other…

Ducks, Newburyport – Lucy Ellmann

Latticing one cherry pie after another, an Ohio housewife tries to bridge the gaps between reality and the torrent of meaningless info that is the United States of America. She worries about her children, her dead parents, African elephants, the bedroom rituals of ‘happy couples’, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and how to hatch an abandoned wood pigeon egg. Is there some trick to surviving survivalists? School shootings? Medical debts? Franks ‘n’ beans? Girl, Woman, Other – Bernardine Evaristo

The Wall – John Lanchester

The Man Who Saw Everything – Deborah Levy

In 1989 Saul Adler (a narcissistic young historian) is hit by a car on the Abbey Road. He is apparently fine; he gets up and goes to see his art student girlfriend, Jennifer Moreau. They have sex then break up, but not before she has photographed Saul crossing the same Abbey Road. Saul leaves to study in communist East Berlin, two months before the Wall comes down. There he will encounter – significantly – both his assigned translator and his translator’s sister, who swears she has seen a jaguar prowling the city. He will fall in love and brood upon his difficult, authoritarian father. And he will befriend a hippy, Rainer, who may or may not be a Stasi agent, but will certainly return to haunt him in middle age.

Lost Children Archive – Valeria Luiselli

A mother and father set out with their kids from New York to Arizona. In their used Volvo–and with their ten-year-old son trying out his new Polaroid camera–the family is heading for the Apacheria: the region the Apaches once called home, and where the ghosts of Geronimo and Cochise might still linger. The father, a sound documentarist, hopes to gather an “inventory of echoes” from this historic, mythic place. The mother, a radio journalist, becomes consumed by the news she hears on the car radio, about the thousands of children trying to reach America but getting stranded at the southern border, held in detention centers, or being sent back to their homelands, to an unknown fate.

An Orchestra of Minorities – Chigozie Obioma

A heart-breaking and mythic story about a Nigerian poultry farmer who sacrifices everything to win the woman he loves, by Man Booker Finalist and author of The Fishermen, Chigozie Obioma.

A contemporary twist on the Odyssey, An Orchestra of Minorities is narrated by the chi, or spirit of a young poultry farmer named Chinonso. His life is set off course when he sees a woman who is about to jump off a bridge. Horrified by her recklessness, he hurls two of his prized chickens off the bridge. The woman, Ndali, is stopped in her tracks.

Chinonso and Ndali fall in love but she is from an educated and wealthy family. When her family objects to the union on the grounds that he is not her social equal, he sells most of his possessions to attend college in Cyprus. But when he arrives in Cyprus, he discovers that he has been utterly duped by the young Nigerian who has made the arrangements for him. Penniless, homeless, we watch as he gets further and further away from his dream and from home.

An Orchestra of Minorities is a heart-wrenching epic about destiny and determination.

Lanny – Max Porter

Quichotte – Salman Rushdie

In a tour-de-force that is both an homage to an immortal work of literature and a modern masterpiece about the quest for love and family, Booker Prize-winning, internationally bestselling author Salman Rushdie has created a dazzling Don Quixote for the modern age.

Inspired by the Cervantes classic, Sam DuChamp, mediocre writer of spy thrillers, creates Quichotte, a courtly, addled salesman obsessed with television, who falls in impossible love with a TV star. Together with his (imaginary) son Sancho, Quichotte sets off on a picaresque quest across America to prove worthy of her hand, gallantly braving the tragicomic perils of an age where “Anything-Can-Happen”. Meanwhile his creator, in a midlife crisis, has equally urgent challenges of his own.

Just as Cervantes wrote Don Quixote to satirise the culture of his time, Rushdie takes the reader on a wild ride through a country on the verge of moral and spiritual collapse. And with the kind of storytelling magic that is the hallmark of his work, the fully realised lives of DuChamp and Quichotte intertwine in a profoundly human quest for love and a wickedly entertaining portrait of an age in which fact is so often indiscernible from fiction.

10 Minutes 38 Seconds In This Strange World – Elif Shafak

Frankissstein – Jeanette Winterson

What will happen when homo sapiens is no longer the smartest being on the planet? Jeanette Winterson shows us how much closer we are to that future than we realise. Funny and furious, bold and clear-sighted, Frankissstein is a love story about life itself.

 

I’m pretty excited about this year’s list. There are, of course, some I’m more excited about than others (and a few I’m not excited about at all), but overall I think it’s a good roundup from this year’s most anticipated releases, with a few surprises which always makes it fun.

Of these I’ve only read one – My Sister the Serial Killer. I’m surprised it made the list, but not displeased to see it there. It’s one that has stuck with me more than I thought it would and definitely defies easy classifications. If you want to read my full review, go here.

Some of the books on the list have yet to be released – Deborah Levy’s new book and the new Salman Rushdie both come out in the UK on August 29th and Margaret Atwood’s new book is the most heavily embargoed on the list and won’t come out until September 10th. There’s a chance publishers might rush release on some, but I’ve heard the new Atwood won’t be out until its slated release date, no matter what.

The books I’m most excited to read are: 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World; The Man Who Saw Everything; Lanny; Girl, Woman, Other and Night Boat to Tangier. The only one I’m definitely not going to read is The Testaments because I don’t feel like I can read it without having read The Handmaid’s Tale, which I’m not that interested in reading right now. I’m also mistrustful of the hype being built up around it.
