Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. Every week there’s a new topic, not related to book blogging. This week’s topic is: Favourite Music Albums. (For a full list of topics – past and future – go here.)
I’ve gotta be honest. I don’t really do albums anymore. I also don’t really listen to the radio or keep up with current hits. I guess I’ve reached that age where I feel like what the kids are listening to really isn’t music. (*squints through huge glasses, waves cane in the air and shouts something about “damn kids”*) Because of this, a lot of the actual whole albums I know well are older. If this were a list of favourite songs, it would look quite different.
So a lot of you will probably look at this list and be slightly flumoxed because you’ve never heard of some of these cos they’re old. Or Canadian. Or old and Canadian. But fuck it, I like what I like.
1. Foo Fighters – Wasting Light (2011)

Do I really need to explain this one? Also – best live show EVER.
2. Atmosphere – You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having (2005) AND When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold (2008)

I love Atmosphere. Seriously. I’ve seen them live at least three times, and I play to keep going whenever they blow through town. And to anyone who says rap isn’t poetry, Slug’s lyrics are like 99% of my argument. I love songs from every album, but I think these two have the largest proportion of favourites. Though probably my favourite song at the moment is The Best Day, which is from To All My Friends, Blood Makes the Blade Holy.
3. People Under the Stairs – The Next Step (1998)
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFYR4XI9Itw?feature=player_detailpage]
I guess this one isn’t entirely accurate. I like a few songs off all their albums. But I picked this one because it has San Francisco Knights on it, which is one of my favourite songs ever. Whatever, good enough.
4. The Tragically Hip – Live Between Us (1997)
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spTGRigvYGw?feature=player_detailpage]
(I’m not sure if this video is the show actually recorded on this album, but if not it’s really close.) I’ve kind of outgrown this one – in fact, I don’t really remember the last time I listened to it. But it was the first Hip album I ever owned, and there was this one epic summer to which this was the soundtrack. It was also the summer I saw these guys in concert at a festival (I think Another Roadside Attraction, but it was a long time ago, you guys). So it’s special. This falls in to the “old and Canadian” category though, so y’all probably have no idea.
5. Chase & Status – No More Idols (2011)
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYpDJw7fThU?feature=player_detailpage]
Blind Faith. Embrace. End Credits.
6. Kings of Leon – Only By the Night (2008)
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnhXHvRoUd0?feature=player_detailpage]
Again, I like songs from all their albums. But I like a bunch of tracks from this one.
7. Incubus – Make Yourself (1999)
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLy4QVp68_U?feature=player_detailpage]
Drive is one of my favourite songs of all time – and the aucousitc version is amazing too. But I also like Pardon Me a lot.
That’s all I can think of, because realistically albums are a thing of the past for me. Got any recommendations for me?
