I didn’t get as much reading done this week as I did last week, but I did manage to finish two books and make a bit of progress on a couple of others. Here’s my week in reading!
Just shelved:
I finished Consent as an audiobook from my library last week, and I’m still not sure what to make of it. I didn’t realize it was set in my city before I started reading it, so that was a bit of a surprise. Then to make it even more weird, one of the apartment buildings a character lives in turned out to be one I used to live in (based on the description of where it was, when it was built and the landmarks and shops around it). That completely threw me. I’ve never had a book that close to home before! The story itself was interesting enough, but didn’t really wow me. Catalogue Baby, on the other hand, was a pure win. I was contacted by the author asking if I would review the book (which she then hand delivered!). I was intrigued by the premise, as I am a huge fan of women sharing their experiences – particularly the ones that involve reproduction. It’s a topic too long kept private, to the detriment of women who need to share in order to process and feel less alone. This book was exactly what I hoped for – open and honest – and the illustrations were gorgeous.
Currently reading:
I’ve circled back to Diary of a Somebody for dipping into at bedtime, and started the audiobook of A Place for Us when my hold came up at the library. It’s proving a little hard to get into, but I’ve heard great things so I’ll give it a bit longer. I recently picked up Conversations in Black after seeing it while perusing Bookish Realm‘s Instagram. It’s a series of topics and conversational responses from some well-known Black activists, politicians and other public figures. I’m finding it really interesting so far.
Up next:
Yep, still pretty much the same planned up next, which I will probably not get to next at all, because I’ll get distracted by something else. As usual. I don’t know why I even bother putting anything in this category; it almost never works out.
What about you guys? What did you read last week? What are you reading now? Have you read any of these books?
A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.
I love reading books set in my hometown but have never got one that close. Sounds like a winner.
Yes and no… it was pretty unnerving! I never expected to have that reading experience!
Wow, that must have been so weird, recognizing a place where you lived before! Looks like a great variety of books for you – hope you’re enjoying them this week!

Book By Book
It was completely surreal! I’m still vaguely unsettled by it. Doesn’t help that it was a bit of an unsettling book!Thank you!
Hello There! Night Witches sounds wonderful and is on my to read list. I’m currently reading Arsenic and Adobo by Mia P. Manansala and Remember the Lilies by Liz Tolsma – another WWII book. Love your header on your blog!
Oooh I saw Arsenic and Adobo somewhere recently and was curious about it! Are you enjoying it? Thank you!
Great story about Catalogue Baby! I read A Place for Us with my book club and really liked it. Not sure if it was universally liked, though. My plans for what to read next almost always fall through, too. I haven’t read any of your books! I do want to read something by Danielle Evans one of these days.
Catalogue Baby turned out to be such a beautiful and powerful read; I’m so glad I decided to say yes to reviewing it! Hopefully I’ll get the review done this week. I’ve heard great things about A Place for Us. I’ve tried to read it a couple of times and couldn’t get into it, now I’m trying audio and so far am not completely drawn in. Will give it a bit longer and see if I can connect! I actually haven’t read anything by Danielle Evans, but this one I feel like I’ve been seeing everywhere!
