I’ve only finished one book in the past week, so I don’t have much new to report! Much of this week’s post will be the same as last week, as the book I finished I added in on spec and the books I was reading before it I’m still reading. It was a corker though!
Just Shelved:
I didn’t even know this book existed when I wrote last week’s post! This is a memoir written by Bobby Hall, AKA Logic. Any Hip Hop fans out there probably won’t need an introduction, but for anyone else, Hall is not only an extremely successful Hip Hop artist who has been heralded as one of the driving voices of his generation, but has broken all kinds of molds. He plays chess, watches anime, brought himself up alongside several close friends who have become his partners, wrote two New York Times Bestselling books (including this one and a novel called Supermarket), retired in his early 30s to move to Montana and raise his young son, acted in Mr. Corman alongside Joseph Gordon Levitt and is currently working on a new album, out on his first tour since retirement from the mainstream music machine, and writing and starring in an upcoming film. He’s done a lot, but more remarkably, he’s done it all extremely well. This book is a memoir of his traumatic early childhood – raised by an alcoholic, bi-polar mother and abandoned by a crack addicted father, poor, in and out of school and forced to largely raise himself. This book stands out not only because of the raw honesty of the stories he shares, but also because it’s well written, engaging and full of really powerful messages. It’s one of those rare books that I connected very strongly to, and it’s my favourite book of the year so far, hands down.
Currently Reading:
I’ve just started The Magician and Still Life for this round of The BookTube Prize, and as such I can’t really talk about either one. I’ve abandoned the two other books I was reading last week, at least for now. Both I plan to come back to, but just not right now. Black Fatigue is a new one I’ve just started, but it’s a topic I want to learn more about, because I think it’s central to the experience of being not just Black, but BIPOC in today’s world. It’s very good so far.
Up Next:
These are the next two I need to read for this round of The BookTube Prize, and I’m interested to give them both a try! I will probably pick up a few other books alongside them, but I don’t know which ones yet.
