Another week gone by just like that! It was a bit of a long one – second week of school for the little one, who managed to pick up some kind of bug that caused a horrendous 24 hours of vomiting and feeling generally horrid. So that was our weekend. Now I’m just waiting for it to hit me, and dreading it because we have an even busier week coming up and generally vomiting=hospital for me. Not great timing! Oh well, it is what it is. Because of illness and its added need for sleep, there was a nap on Saturday, during which time I was finally able to finish a book I’ve been working on for a month, so I guess there’s your up side!
Just Shelved
Strangers to Ourselves is another book I got access to through Netgalley. I had mixed feelings about it – mostly positive, but there were a couple of things that weren’t perfect. But a great read if you’re interested in learning more about the medical and social issues surrounding mental illness, and read some accounts of specific patients. I picked up The Girl, the Penguin, the Home-Schooling and the Gin (obviously a parody of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse) pretty much just because the title spoke to my deep Covid-19 trauma (if only there had been a penguin, tho). Unfortunately it didn’t really have the follow through – there were a couple of cute pages, a couple that were deeply relatable, one or two that were a bit funny, but that’s really all there is to say about this, so I won’t be reviewing it. 2 stars. The Dark Hours is the fourth Renée Ballard book, and follows the same formula as the previous books, for the most part. It was an easy read, definitely had the suspense I was looking for, and I still love the combo of Ballard and Bosch. I also finally finished Lonely Castle in the Mirror, which was a bit slow through the first part of the book, but really picked up at the end and had me in torrents of tears by the end! So glad to have discovered this one.
Currently Reading
I’ve decided to re-start the Harry Bosch series now that I’ve finished the Renée Ballards that are currently published. I’ve read the first three or four before, but so long ago that I needed a refresher. I’m enjoying it, but not as much as the Ballard books, tbh. I’ve read the first story and a half in Night of the Living Rez, and it’s really good so far, but also a lot. So I’m not sure if I’ll be able to stick with it right now. The Myth of Normal is the first Maté book I’ve read (another Netgalley), and it’s really interesting. A lot of what he’s saying makes sense to me, and I am learning some interesting (and often terrifying) information about how trauma affects a person and how it can be transferred down through generations. Terrifying for a parent to read!!
Up Next
Mostly the same as last week – things didn’t really go as planned reading-wise for me this week! Oh well, there’s always next week I guess.
That’s it for my week! What about you guys? Which books did you finish this week? Which one did you enjoy the most? Have you read any of my selections?
A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.
I didn’t finish a book this week, but Lessons by Ian McEwan is the one I’m in the middle of. I need to decide whether to devote a major chunk of time to it or set it aside. I also let two audiobooks expire without renewing the library loans on them because I just wasn’t enjoying them that much. Life has been busy, so maybe that’s part of why I’m in a bit of a reading slump.
Hope you escape any germs you were exposed to and have a great week!
I keep seeing Lessons around, but it hasn’t piqued my interest. Isn’t it also really long? I have gotten to the point where I rarely persist with a book that’s not making me feel excited to read (unless it’s a review copy), so I definitely say YAY! to just letting them go if you weren’t into them! I hope your slump passes – sometimes life just takes over and reading has to wait! So far the grown ups in the house seem okay, but as we don’t know what it is, we have no idea if we’re still in the incubation period. Fingers (and toes) crossed! Thank you, I hope you have a great week too!
So sorry your daughter got sick. Stomach viruses are the worst! Only good thing is that they don’t last long. Hope you escape it!
I love the Ballard & Bosch combo, too! I just read Ballard book 2 this summer, so I have some catching up to do. Sounds like fun to reread the Bosch series. I read a lot of his earlier ones but not the whole series. We LOVED the Bosch TV series and are enjoying Bosch: Legacy now. I;m waiting for a Rene Ballard spin-off!
Enjoy your books this week and stay healthy!

Book By Book
Thank you! I’m not sure if it’s a stomach virus or not – apparently sometimes kids get weird and more intense symptoms to viruses that don’t have the same effect on grown up, and vomiting seems to be how my kid reacts to, well, ALL OF THEM. So I’m really, really hoping that it doesn’t have the same impact on the grown ups! yes, I loved the Ballard books. I haven’t finished the Bosch series of books or the TV show, and I haven’t seen Bosch: Legacy yet. But I plan to, as I did like what I saw! I really hope they do a Ballard spin off as I’d love to see her come to life. Such a great character. I hope you have a good week!
