Another decent reading week! I finished four books this week, and they were all good – but two were even better. Now I’m just trying to figure out what to read next to keep the enjoyable experience going!
Just Shelved
I’ve had How to Keep House While Drowning on my TBR for a while, but it came up recently and one of you guys recommended it to me in the comments. So when I was scrolling through looking for something to read, it grabbed my eye. And I’m so grateful – I really enjoyed it! Definitely has a great perspective and interesting voice. The Friday Night Knitting Club is a book I had on my shelves for ages and eventually unhauled. I had it as an audibook, so decided to give it a try. I expected it to be an emotional read with some great knitting content and strong female characters and friendships. It had some of that, but didn’t really wow me. It was sweet, but not life changing. The Rural Diaries, on the other hand, was much better than I expected. It’s a celebrity memoir, but it’s also a memoir of moving to a farm and stepping out of modern, crazy life. So I figured it could go either way. But I actually really enjoyed it. Great pacing, not too celeb-ish, comes across as a highly relatable account of some of life’s ups and downs that all of us go through, as well as some really insightful reflections on what these events taught her about her priorities, her family, and what she needed to make herself feel firmly placed in the world. I really liked her narration, as well. Honey Farm Dreaming was middle of the road. It also had that farm, conservation and nature focus I’m interested in, but was a bit darker and more difficult to connect to. I’m glad I read it, but I didn’t connect to it as strongly as The Rural Diaries.
Currently Reading
I’m not sure if I’m going to stick with The Yarn Whisperer. It’s somewhat interesting, but hasn’t totally grabbed me yet. I am not sure what other books I’m going to read next, I’m craving a memoir that incorporates some kind of interest or experience I can relate to that’s well written and, ideally, at least a little bit funny. I’m just having a hard time actually finding the next book to pick up that fits that! So we’ll see.
Up Next
Well, I read one of the books on my “up next” list from last week, so I’ll stick with the rest in case the trend continues! I’m really into memoirs about gardening, knitting, crochet, motherhood, and ADHD at the moment. So if you’ve got any suggestions that fit that very narrow set of niches, I’d love to hear about it!
What about you guys? What did you read this week? Have you read any of the books on my list? Any great finds you’d like to recommend?
A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.
That was me! I’m glad you liked How to Keep House While Drowning. I listened to the audiobook and might pick it up and read it in print another time.
I don’t know if you read The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother when it came out, but I thought that memoir about motherhood had a lot of humor in it. The author Amy Chua just has a novel coming out, which I haven’t read. Another motherhood memoir I really liked was Expecting Adam by Martha Beck.
Thank you for the recommendation! It was so good! I listened to the audiobook as well and it was a good one to listen while doing housework! Those both sound really interesting and I haven’t heard of either. I’ll look for them! Thank you!
