I’ve had quite a good reading week so far, despite being sick, having a family member end up in hospital (just for a day and they’re fine, don’t worry), and trying to step up school work for my kid! Here’s what I’ve finished, what I’m reading, and what I *might* read next!
Just Shelved
That’s right, I actually read three books this week! I know, I’m surprised too. I read Meredith, Alone (thanks in no small part to a positive comment about it!) and absolutely loved it. It was better than I had expected, and did a wonderful job of empathetically presenting a character who is struggling, but also absolutely making the best of her situation. I loved my time spent with her, and can imagine that I’ll probably re-visit her in the future! I found Raceless and The Air Raid Book Club because they were in the virtual sale bin on an audibook site I use. Raceless was a new perspective on family, race and secrets that gave me a lot of new things to think about. Well worth reading if you’re interested in the impact of race denial on a child. The Air Raid Book Club is, as you can guess from the title, about books and WWII in London. My paternal grandmother became a reader (so family lore goes) when she began reading during air raids. She was a reader for the rest of her life, and I discovered some of my favourite books and authors because she had left them in her spare room when I was visiting. This family connection made me interested in picking up this book, but it also turned out to be an enjoyable read, if a bit of a sad one!
Currently Reading
I’m still going with Snapdragon and Why Mummy Drinks – the former is print which I have little time for these days, and the latter is one I’m listening to, but haven’t really felt like I wanted to go back to this week so far. This Much Is True is one I’ve only just started, but I’m enjoying it so far. Margolyes is, if you don’t know her, a British comedic actress, well known for having zero filter and lots of risqué stories! Her book is exactly as you’d expect if you’ve ever seen her in interviews.
Up Next
Surprisingly, I actually did read a couple of the books from my “Up Next” list last week! Very unusual for me, I must say! So these are the remaining three, but I wouldn’t hold your breath on them – I’m not likely to keep that up for long!
That’s it for my reading week. What about you guys? Finish any good books lately? Have you read any of these, or do you want to read any of them?
A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.
I look forward to hearing more about Return to Nature. I’m glad to see how much you enjoyed Meredith, Alone. I wonder if it’s a book I’d like…I’m very much interested in loneliness in our world. I just finished Eleanor Oliphant which explores that theme a bit, and I liked it a lot.
Well, I tried to start Return to Nature, got distracted, and haven’t been back since. I’ll try again when I’m in a better headspace! I liked Meredith, Alone much more than Eleanor Oliphant. It is an interesting one as it seems like it would deal with loneliness, but it’s not as much focused on that as I expected in terms of the main character. But it does look at her family history and that’s a complex situation. I really hope you get to give it a try – I found there was a lot there to consider and it was a very enjoyable read!
