Still not a prolific week! I somehow completely missed that it was Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon this week until it was almost over, so I missed out on participating. I finished one book because I decided to join in for an hour or so. I really want to actually join in next time around because it’s been something like a year and a half since I last properly participated! We did get lots done in the garden and sorting through some of the stuff that’s been in our storage area since we moved, so that’s good. My kid also re-discovered biking and spent the last two days practicing with great excitement. And we have managed to pick up another illness (yes, for anyone thinking this sounds familiar, it’s been about a week or two since we got over the last one, and that came only a couple of weeks after I was horribly ill in January and February, so it seems as if this entire year so far has consisted of one illness after another!), so we shall see how that progresses through the household. The kid is currently rather tired and coughy and sore of throat. But still has energy for biking, so I’m hoping that’s a good sign. We shall see. On to the books!
Just Shelved
I’ve actually finished a book! Okay, so it’s only one, and it comes after starting and not finishing at least ten, but hey. It still counts!
Currently Reading
Still sort of, kind of, possibly reading these three. I finally got my second-hand copy of The Edible Garden because even though I’m enjoying listening to it, I really need to be able to see it in print for the lists and stuff. So I’m planning to finish listening to it, but refer to the print copy when it gets a bit too much info for my ears!
Up Next
Same list as last week because I haven’t discovered any new books this week and I don’t know what will come next! I do have a couple of possible re-reads I’m thinking about:
I love I Capture the Castle and have re-read it periodically since I discovered it as a teenager. I haven’t read The Diary of a Nobody since I was either a kid or young teen, and honestly I don’t really remember much of it. But it has come up a few times lately and I’ve been reminded of it. I think I might pick it up again and see what it’s about and whether it jogs any memories!
That’s it for me this week! What about you guys? Have you read any of these? What did you read this week, and are there any books you’re excited to get to next?
A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.
Sorry that illness keeps revisiting your household! Never fun. Your slate of books looks interesting and eclectic – I’m curious about the Unintnetional Birder title. It seems familiar somehow but I know I haven’t read it. Happy Reading! Visiting today from The Book Date.
Ah thank you! You know, I hadn’t heard of it until I came across it in a Libro.fm sale. I love nature and learning about the little creatures that share our gardens. I’ve recently moved to a less densely populated area, and though there were birds where I lived before, there are so many more now, and I can hear their calls every time I step outside. It’s lovely and has me curious to explore their lives! Happy reading to you too, and thanks for visiting!
I am so sorry to read that you ad your family have spent the winter and early spring sick. Ugh. All of our immune systems aren’t as strong as they used to me. Thanks COVID. I hope that the bike-riding is a sign that the scratchy throat is a sign of allergies, not illness.
I read I Capture the Castle several years ago and loved it. Then I reread it and thought, hmm. I loved that? Maybe I need to try a third time to determine the answer. Love or not love.
Yeah, it’s a bit trying. I have a bunch of medical issues so it’s always a month for me when it was a week for everyone else in the family! It is what it is, as long as we get back to health in the end. I don’t think it’s allergies as a proper cough has begun, but it also doesn’t seem to be too bad, so hopefully it’s a more transient virus that won’t cause too much discomfort! Me, I definitely have the allergies going on, though!
You know, it’s one of those odd things. Occasionally I have similar feeling if I revisit a book I loved. Even with this one, the story now seems quite dated, quaint and overly dramatic. And yet…. I don’t know what it is. Something about the narrator’s voice I think, and how it’s written. Despite the failings in the story (many of which just show its age, honestly), I think when I pick it up it transports me back to how I felt when I first read it when I was about 14. It was one of those reading experiences that had me completely immersed in the book. I’ll always love it for that, and it holds up well enough to still pull me in despite the parts of it I’ve got a ton of criticism for. I don’t know how to explain it… but I think I’ll always love it, at least in part. I do get it, though. Without that strong nostalgic element, it definitely would be harder to relate to I think!
I’m sorry sickness has been lurking around you all year. It makes reading difficult, I think.
I’m reading a couple of birding books, and I’d like to read some poetry this month.
You’re so right – it makes everything low energy and the effort of engaging with a book feels quite taxing! I know I’ll get back to it if things settle, so just waiting and trying to be patient! I haven’t looked into birding for years, not since I was a kid, but now that we’ve moved into a more green area I’m noticing birds everywhere. I’ve been realizing that other than the really common ones I don’t really know what a lot of them are. I’ve downloaded an app on my phone and am starting to try to learn the different types of birds in the area, but there are a few that are proving tricky! I am loving the birdsong that’s all around me every time I step out of the house. It’s such a friendly and happy sound! Good luck with your poetry – I’d make a recommendation but all I know is t.s. elliot’s cat book and Emily Dickinson, so I’m not much help!
