The illness my kid had a couple of weeks back that I thought I had dodged has hit me full force this week. But we still managed to get out for some fun activities and a yummy patio lunch on Canada Day, and my garden has still been getting watered. My kid is bored, but surviving. So I’ll count the wins where I can get them! It’s not too terrible, but the coughing HURTS. I don’t remember any of the five+ other illnesses I’ve had so far in 2024 having such painful coughing, so that’s not ideal. But the other symptoms so far have been manageable, so I’m getting through it. I did finish a couple of books this week as audiobooks have been great while I’ve been stuck on the sofa! I hope you guys have had a better week!
Just Shelved
I enjoyed Growing Old, though it’s not a new favourite. I think it’s a good one for someone who is either beginning to face old age themselves and daunted at the prospect, or anyone with a loved one who is reaching their older years and is looking for a bit of an insider’s look at what that feels like and the things to consider in what will be the best living situation for them. She’s a vibrant, spunky person, and I liked that she happily debunks a lot of the stereotypes of the slowly fading aged. The Story of Arthur Truluv was, if I’m honest, a complete whim. It turned out to be a great companion for Growing Old as is has characters in that stage of life who are facing some of the same choices. It was also a great book to read while ill because it was entertaining, sweet, and didn’t demand too much of my mental faculties!
Currently Reading
Still reading the first two, though I’m nearly finished A Vicious Circle. Still the same status on this one as last week – great writing, mostly unlikeable characters, decent plot. Best part is seeing some of the characters evolve, both for better and (so far) worse. Or one then the other. It’s a complex book, lots to think about, recommend. Wilding I’ve tried a few times and not gotten into. I decided to try again while I was on the sofa not able to move other than to blow my nose. Due to illness delirium, some of the early parts of the book are a little fuzzy. But I got the gist and I’m going to press on as I haven’t the patience to go back and listen again! It’s informative so far, if a little dryly written.
Up Next
I am sick, so I’m just going to take the lazy route on this section and not update my potential TBR. Also, who knows, I actually might read one of these next. You never know!
That’s it for me this week! What have you guys read? Have you read any of my books? Any of them on your TBR or tickle your fancy?
A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.
Coughing is not fun. I do hope you are able to get over that soon!
I think I’ll strike Wilding from my list. I’d love to read about the topic, but not if it is on the dry side.
Sorry to be so late to the party…just trying to get back to blogging after cleaning up the mess Hurricane Beryl left us.
Me too! Thank you! I will persist with Wilding – I have heard great things about it, so it’s possible it’s just the fact that I’m sick that is making it harder for me to engage with it. I’ll let you know how it goes! Oh, no – did it cause a lot of damage in your area? Is everyone okay?
Sorry to hear you have been sick. Have you tested for Covid? My cousin ended up with the most recent variant that is going around and it took 6 weeks at least for her to recover. Her doctor suspects she has long Covid now.
It looks like you have been reading some interesting books. I’m interested in both Growing Old and The Story of Arthur Truluv. I turned 71 this year and I still feel pretty healthy, but I figure I’m lucky if I have 10 good years left. This is probably why I’m interested in Sipworth too.
Thank you! Yes, we all tested for COVID multiple times, and it’s all been negative, so it looks like we just managed to get caught up in a summer cold that’s doing the rounds! I’ve got a couple of chronic medical issues (asthma being one of them) so it usually takes me quite a while to get over even a cold. I do hope your cousin is able to recover – long COVID seems to be a difficult and lengthy thing, so hopefully she’ll start to improve sooner than later! I enjoyed both of these books – though I’m younger, my medical issues have me feeling like I’m in the same phase of life as most of the 70ish-year-olds I know! I liked reading them together, and I liked that while both of them do show that growing older is difficult and frustrating at times, it doesn’t have to be without fun and friendship. I definitely want to read Sipsworth soon, so let me know if you get to it first and enjoy it! Here’s to a surprisingly long amount of good years! 😉
I love the jacket on Sipworth so keep thinking I should check that out. I did just book a trip to NZ on points to see a singer I like, so maybe I should get that running one….but not a runner…#Bookdate (and I hope you get better soon!)
Sipsworth definitely looks interesting! I’m not a runner either, I just like women’s memoirs about finding something they want to push themselves for. So it’s good for that! I hope you have a great trip!
Hope you are over that horrible cough soon, I dislike that kind of illness as it leaves sore muscles for sure. Hope you continue to get some reading done while spending time on the couch.
Oh, you’re right! All the muscles around my lungs hurt! It’s improving, which is better than that alternative! I’m off the couch now, trying to still get some listening done though!
