LINK-UP | IT’S MONDAY! WHAT ARE YOU READING?

This has been quite a good reading week. I’m quite surprised to discover, at the end of it, that I managed to read three books this week – and that they were all excellent. I’d very much like to have more weeks like this! Here’s the breakdown.

Just shelved:

          

I have had I’m Still Here on my shelf for years, but somehow kept passing it by. I finally borrowed the audiobook from the library – and voila! Completely into it. I loved Austin’s voice – literally and narratively – and I found her writing style so easy to relate to. I know writing this must have been very difficult for her at times, but her openness made it all the more poignant. Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race is probably one of the most talked-about books on race to come out in the past few years. I tried to read it a few times and failed to get very far, but this time I gave it more of a concerted effort – and that paid off. I can see why this is such a well regarded book, and it is an important one. While most of the books I’ve read about Black experiences of racism have been focused in the US, this one is about racism as experienced in modern day England. As such it held more information that was new to me, and was an interesting point of comparison with books like I’m Still Here. Definitely worth checking out. Spinning Silver I just finished tonight and man, do I have a book hangover! It was a present from one of my best friends, Scott, and not my usual genre. But he convinced me to give me a try by telling me that it’s fantasy but doesn’t have a lot of world-building or complicated social systems to learn, and features some very strong female characters. Basically, it’s great for feminists who are also lazy readers. That’s me. And it was absolutely brilliant – I completely fell in love with the characters, I loved the world and magic, and the story had me flipping pages at a furious pace. I want more.

I’ve only just started Catalogue Baby, so I don’t have anything to report about it yet, other than that it’s beautifully illustrated and unflinchingly honest. I’m excited to get further into it! Consent is my new audiobook listen, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it’s easy to get into – and set in my neck of the woods! Don’t know how I completely missed that. I came across it when it was longlisted for this year’s Women’s Prize for Fiction, and it was one of the ones that interested me the most. Glad I had a reason to give it a try!
