It’s been a few weeks since I’ve written a Monday post – mostly because I’ve not finished a single book in what feels like a very long time (looking at my book lists, it seems to have been just over a month, but feels much longer). I still haven’t finished any books this week, but I’ve at least tried to start a couple, so I’m sharing those ones!
Just Shelved
Nada. Not a single book.
Currently Reading
The Book of Joe by Jonathan Tropper
The Fire Next Time, Nobody Knows My Name, No Name in the Streets and The Devil Finds Work by James Baldwin
These are all books I’ve started recently, read part of, but not finished. You Mean I’m Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?! was the first book about ADHD I got thanks to a recommendation from my therapist at the time. It’s also one I’ve never read entirely, and keep sort of picking up, reading bits of, and putting back on the shelf. Which is a fine way to read it. It’s good, but a little dated, even in the updated edition (still uses ADD instead of ADHD, for example) but was also one of the first books of its kind to be published in the ’90s. The Book of Joe is one I got from the library a while ago and am sort of enjoying the style of, but not so much the actual story or characters. We’ll see. I have read The Fire Next Time before and absolutely loved it, and this Everyman’s Classic edition that includes it along with three other pieces of writing is a great opportunity to revisit it and go further into his work. Again, not sure how far I’ll make it given my current lack of reading, but enjoying dipping into it.
Mindfulness Activities for Kids with ADHD – Sharon Grand, PhD
I’m also currently reading A Tale of Magic with my kid as it’s quite a long book and a bit much to read alone yet. Not very far into it, but going well so far. And we’re working on learning more about our ADHD and finding age-appropriate books that will help guide us through some of the tools that can help manage it and help us understand it. This is a great one because it’s story-based and features animals who are dealing with various symptoms. It’s a great way to introduce ideas of how to cope with some of the various difficult elements of it in a gentle way.
Up Next
Friends of Dorothy by Sandi Toksvig
What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew by Dr. Sharon Saline
I’ve no idea what I’ll read next – if indeed I read anything in the near future – but all of these are currently appealing, so they’re possibilities!
That’s it! That’s my week in (lack of) books. Hopefully you all had a better one! If you’ve read any of these I’d love to hear what you thought, or if you’ve read any wonderful books lately – particularly ones that made you feel cosy and lovely while reading them, please drop recommendations too!
A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date. I also link up with The Sunday Salon post each week hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz (and sometimes include some of her content prompts).
I enjoyed The Book of Joe – I love Tropper’s sense of humor. This Is Where I Leave You was also excellent – moving and full of heart but also hilarious. Did you know that The Book of Joe was made into a TV series called October Road? My husband and I both enjoyed it. And I haven’t read any James Baldwin yet, but I’d really like to.
Great update – hope you’re enjoying your books this week!

Book By Book
I love Tropper’s humour as well – the only one of his I’ve read in full is This Is Where I Leave You, but I’ve enjoyed the bit of Book of Joe I’ve read (I’ve fallen off reading lately so haven’t managed to finish it, unfortunately). I didn’t know it was made into a series! Thank you – I’ll definitely check it out! I love Baldwin, so many wonderfully thought-provoking bits! Thank you – you too!
I’m glad you posted even if you hadn’t read a single page. Blogging is about books, but it’s also about sharing a bit of our regular lives. Sometimes that means we are bookless.
Yes, I’m finding life a bit much at the moment, so reading is always the first thing to fall off when it gets too much. I’ve also been catching up on some TV because it’s lower input entertainment! Hopefully I’ll get back to it soon. I’m reading little bits, just not enough to be finishing things!
Even if you don’t get a chance to do much reading, it’s nice to hear from you and know that you wish you had gotten a chance to read. I’m glad you are dipping into the Baldwin collection. I’ve always wanted to read James Baldwin. I’ve read quotes from him, and they strike me as very wise.
Thank you! ❤ I’ve only finished The Fire Next Time, which I’m now re-reading as part of a collection but plan to continue on when I’ve finished it. I tried Giovanni’s Room, and it was good but a bit slow and sad for me at the time. I might try a different one instead next time I go for his fiction. His non-fiction is brilliant though – very insightful, very well worded, and depressingly still very valid.
