If you’ve been around this neck of the woods for a while, you’ll remember that pre-baby I used to participate in a wonderful event that takes place twice a year called Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon. I haven’t been able to participate in it for a few years because either I haven’t had the stamina or I haven’t had the time. But I’m hoping to start participating regularly again now that the kid is older, and I’m starting with this one! It starts tomorrow at 8AM EST, which is an ungodly 5AM in my time zone (for a list of start times by time zone, go here). It goes all day and night though, so I’m planning to read for as much of the time I am awake as possible, plus a bit of extra at bedtime tonight to make up for the fact that I absolutely positively NOT getting up before sunrise. I’m very excited about this, and not quite sure how to contain myself!
In case you’re new to the readathon, here’s what you need to know:
What is Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-thon? For 24 hours, we read books, post to our blogs, Twitters, Instagrams, Litsy, Facebook, Goodreads and MORE about our reading, and visit other readers’ homes online. We also participate in mini-challenges throughout the day. It happens twice a year, in April and in October. The next event is October 20, 2018! We start at 8am Eastern. See this time in your time zone by clicking on the Start Times page.
It was created by the beloved Dewey from The Hidden Side of a Leaf (her blog is archived at the Wayback Machine). The first one was held in October 2007. Dewey died in late 2008. We’re still saddened by her absence, but the show must go on. The read-a-thon was renamed to honor its founder in 2009.
Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-thon has been hosted by Heather of My Capricious Life and Andi of Estella’s Revenge, with help from scads of volunteers since 2013.
I love that it’s a day in which I can put reading ahead of everything else I am usually supposed to be doing and not feel guilty about it. Realistically I’m sure I’ll only end up reading for a small portion of the allotted 24 hours, but even if I only read for 4 or 5 hours that’s more reading than I’ve had a chance to do in one day for ages.
I’ve participated in the readathon many, many times now, so I’ve got some helpful pro tips here if you’re interested.
If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late! Head on over and register for the readathon right now!
Books on my possible readathon TBR are:
Of course I might keep going with the books I’m already working on or pick up something else entirely, so who knows what I’ll end up reading! I’ll be updating this post throughout the day, so feel free to bookmark it and check back to see how I’m doing and what I’ve decided to read.
I’ll also be sharing progress on Twitter. Head on over and join in the fun by following Dewey’s account here!
Good luck, Readathoners!
Readathon update:
So far I’ve had a hard time settling in to read, so I’ve only done a few hours. I’m jumping back and forth between three books:
I’ve been going back and forth between text, graphic novel, and audio, respectively. I’m enjoying the variation and all three books are coming along well. Of the three of them I’m probably most enjoying the Durrell, mostly because of the subject matter being the lightest – I’m on the second book in the trilogy, Birds, Beasts and Relatives. I might try switching to audio for this one as well.
How is the readathon going for you guys? What are you reading?
Have fun! I read Evelyn Hugo awhile ago and enjoyed it!
I just finished Daisy Jones & the Six and had such fun reading it. Have heard great things about Evelyn as well!!
I think you mean October 2019, Em.

I love Dewey’s! I’m participating too, but I have to start late. I hope you get tons of reading done!
Me too! I’m also finding it very hard to just sit and read. I’m out of practice. I keep popping up to throw on some laundry or tidy things up. Oh well, some reading is better than none, right? What are you planning to read?
