TOP TEN TUESDAY | ATMOSPHERIC BOOKS

I love this prompt. There are so many books I’ve read that managed to create such a strong sense of setting that it seemed to lift off the page and envelope me – for better or worse. Here are some of the books that stand out when I think of this.

Obviously the type of atmosphere these books evoke are different. We’ve got the sinister in Rebecca, the wet and vaguely boggy in The Essex Serpent, the threatening in Coraline, the perfect childhood summer in Swallows and Amazons, the post-apocalyptic in Station Eleven and the warm and sun-kissed in Under the Tuscan Sun. But, as different as these books are, each one was able to transport me into a setting that I could literally feel surrounding me as I read – either pressing in upon me or enveloping me in a warm hug – but all very present and real to me.

What about you guys? Which books managed to transport you as you read? Were any of my picks on your list this week?

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.

Hahaha! It definitely does do that. I won’t be reading it to my kid for a good few years yet, kid’s book in theory or not! Definitely one where having a super vivid imagination can create some yikes!
