Well, this is an interesting one – as I sit here typing out a book blog for which I get absolutely zero monetary compensation! So I guess I’d say – this one! But as that’s one, and this is a list of ten, let’s see what else I can come up with.
- Book reviewing. I do this here, but I’ve also written reviews for online publications for free as well.
- Work in a community library or school library.
- Help with any programs that help kids find books they’ll love reading.
- Volunteer to read to people with medical issues that prevent them being able to read. I have a medical issue that puts my eyesight at risk as I age, and I’m terrified of reaching the day when I can no longer read physical books. I have put a lot of work into learning to listen to audiobooks precisely for this reason (and it has turned out to be one of the best things I’ve done as now I do most of my reading via audiobook) but not all books are available as audiobooks, there’s often a long wait for newer releases at the library, and who knows if I’ll always be able to afford the ones I can’t borrow.
- Narrating audiobooks. I don’t know if I’d be any good at it, but if I were, I’d do a certain amount for free. Same reason as above.
- Work on a literary magazine. I’d love to help put together content for one of the literary magazines I enjoy reading, and I’d gladly do so for free, at least to start with.
- Run a bookstore. I don’t care if it never turned a profit, I’d be so happy going to work each day and spending my working life surrounded by books and readers.
- Volunteer for a charity that helps find books to distribute to communities and schools that need donations.
- Pretty much any other book-related job ever, if I’m being totally honest. I just love books so much!
What about you guys? Which jobs would you happily do for free just because you love books so much? Are any of mine on your list?
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
I forgot about book reviewing! XD
It’s probably the one I feel like I’d most like to do, but would also be quite hard!
#5 sounds fun, but probably also harder than it seems.
Oh totally! I tend to get yawny when reading aloud, so it would take some work to get used to. It must be hard to read all day – probably requires some voice coaching!
Great list! I especially loved #4. My grandmother, who has always loved to read, was devastated when she lost her eyesight as well as the strength to hold a book. She loved being read to and said that she never felt lonely when she was lost inside a book 🙂
Happy TTT!

That is such a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing! Reading is such a wonderful thing, and so magical. I’d rather lose many other abilities before the ability to read.
It would be cool to narrate audiobooks. Who knows if I’d be good at it but it would be good. 🙂
I feel exactly the same way! I do wish I were better at accents and voices – I feel like the narrators who can do those well always push their performance above and beyond!
We are all volunteers!
I just love Tuesdays; I wish I could just stay home and read book blogs all day.
Yes, we are! Best volunteer gig out there ;). I fully agree. Particularly at this time of year!
I’m sure there are plenty of programs where you can read to children and/or people who can’t for any other reason – you’ve got me wanting to look into them as well, because that does sound like an amazing volunteer option.
I would hope so! I’m still in pandemic life, unfortunately, so not comfortable going into public areas without a mask – and I imagine reading aloud with a mask would be pretty difficult! But at some point I’d like to look into it. For now I’ll just stick to reading to my kid as much as I can! It’s great practice – if I don’t do a good job it becomes quickly apparent!
A great list! And lovely reasons behind them.
Have a great week!
