TOP TEN TUESDAY | BOOKS SET IN/ABOUT NATURE (ANIMALS, PLANTS, FARMING ETC.)

Today I decided to share some of the books I’ve read or want to read on the topic of nature. This is being used very, very broadly, as I’m pretty much using it to denote any wholesome activity that takes place outside or involves interfacing with a part of the natural world (like The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating). I’ve included books on gardening, how nature is medicine, hiking, re-wilding, farming, homesteading, nature study, and indigenous knowledge. It’s a loose string of connection between some of these books, but in my mind they all share a core element that makes me think of them in the same area. I hope there’s something here you’ll be interested in picking up!

That’s it for me this week! Do you have any recommendations I should add to my TBR for nature-themed books?

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.

Thank you! I love Herriot’s books – I like the mix of humour and hard work and a simpler kind of life that isn’t afraid of muck! It’s a life I think I’d love if I were in a different place and situation.

I think it had its ups and downs, but I liked the way it shows economic fragility, what illness can do to a person and a life, and how dire circumstances can become opportunities to find parts of ourselves. I just read another book called Coasting by Elise Downing about a young woman who decides on a whim to run around the UK – she ended up being the first woman and youngest person to do it. Might be up your alley!

Braiding Sweetgrass is on my list to read soon. I love natureful books, too. I didn’t think I particularly liked WILD yet I think of it all the time so I should upgrade my evaluation of it. A WALK IN THE WOODS is so funny. Bill Bryson is so funny.

Yes I’ve been meaning to read Braiding Sweetgrass for literally YEARS at this point! I couldn’t get through Wild, but I need to try again. I do love stories about people taking to nature – I just finished one called Coasting by Elise Downing about a young woman who runs around the UK on a whim, and it was really good! Bill Bryson is hilarious. He’s the writer who showed me that non-fiction can be funny and really fascinating, so I have a lot to thank him for!

I’m not super outdoorsy other than pottering in the garden, but I love nature and am fascinated by things like companion planting and how ecosystems are structured around each living part. I love those kinds of memoirs as well. I find it inspiring and beautiful!
