This week’s theme is a Christmas freebie – so any books that you connect with either Christmas, other seasonal celebrations or cool weather! I’ve selected a few of each and complied some books for readers both young and old(er) to enjoy – including some I’ve yet to read myself!
Some books for younger readers:
I recently watched the new series based on Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares, and while neither the book nor the show were top all-time favourites, there were things about both that I enjoyed, and they definitely fit well into the series. Red Is Best is a delightful little book that is all about self determination and kids’ unique preferences and the importance of allowing them to make decisions for themselves. It’s seasonal because it’s all about winter clothing but also because of the colours, of course! The Snowy Day is, I believe, one of the first children’s books to hit the mainstream that had a Black main character. It’s now a classic and lovely for so many reasons.
I adored Mackesy’s book and it has so much whimsy, slow contemplation and wonderfully hopeful messaging that I can’t help but feel warm and fuzzy when I think of it. Winston is a book my daughter and I tried to read last year and didn’t finish – but enjoyed the experience! I think we will try it again and see how far we get! (It has a chapter a day to last through December.) The Black Dog is one that just has that warm cozy feeling to it, but also has a great message about confronting the Big things in life that scare you, even if it’s hard. I feel like there’s something in that message for everyone in 2020. And The Christmasaurus is one I am looking forward to reading with my kid when she’s a bit older!
And a few wintery books I’d like to read:
I haven’t finished any of Kay’s books yet, but what I have read I loved. In the Midst of Winter and Winter fit purely based on their titles (and are both books I really want to read by authors I admire).
Names for the Sea is all about a family who up stakes and move to Iceland, so I feel like it definitely fits with the seasonal theme! Last Night in Montreal is one I really enjoyed when I read it and though it doesn’t give you the warm fuzzy feeling of Christmas, the setting definitely fits, and it’s a good one if you’re looking for a thriller!
Have you read any of these? Which are your favourites? Which other wintery or Christmassy books would you add to my list? Any books that centre around other seasonal celebrations that you love?
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
I want to read Names For The Sea too. I haven’t liked Sarah Moss’s other books, but this one sounds too interesting to pass up.
I’ve only tried one of her others and couldn’t get into it, but I think it’s worth a try as well!
Nice list! I haven’t read any of them, but some of these look really good.
Happy TTT!

I’m glad to hear that there might be something here to capture your interest!
Aw, The Snowy Day. That book brings back such good memories.
There’s a little film of it on Amazon Prime that I’ve been enjoying as well!
The children’s books look so good! Here is my Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
They really are – thank you!
Interesting selections. I’ve read Names for the Sea and couple of the children’s books. Snowy Day is a lifelong favorite. I was in its first generation!
How was Names? I definitely love Snowy Day, even though I only just got introduced to it by my mother-in-law!
Very grateful for it.
All of these covers are marvellous.
My post.
Thanks!
I’m enjoying hearing books read aloud to me this Christmas via audiobooks.
Yes, me too!
Middle Grade and picture books set at Christmastime are always so cute! The Black Dog sounds truly cozy and lovely. (And reading a chapter of How Winston Delivered Christmas each day sounds like a great way to spend December! 🙂 )
Happy reading!! 🙂
My kid got a bit bored of it, but I’m hoping next year it’ll be more age appropriate! I loved The Black Dog, and there’s something extra magical about looking at the holidays through children’s eyes!
