I love books that are either about different places, or that are about people traveling in one way or another. I enjoy reading about the kinds of adventures I won’t ever do myself, and I enjoy the feeling of stepping into a culture and landscape I really like (Italy and France being two of my favourites). I haven’t read that many new travel books lately that I’ve really enjoyed, so this is more of a roundup of ones I’ve read over my life that stand out as having been excellent.
Memoirs About/Featuring Travel
Fiction
I am planning to re-read some of these I haven’t picked up in ages (Under the Tuscan Sun, A Year In Provence, Nothing to Declare) because I’d like to experience those places again!
What about you guys? Do you enjoy armchair traveling? Which are your favourite travel books? Do you prefer fictional stories about travel, and if so which are your top picks?
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
I enjoy books about journeys of any kind. They’re exciting and let me experience places and adventures I’ll never experience in real life. Armchair traveling is the best! No crowds, no inclement weather, no expense, no motion sickness, no uncomfortable airplane seats…
Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

Exactly! Ugh, those airplane seats…
You picked some of my favorite books: Station Eleven; Hitchhiker’s Guide; and Black Dove White Raven!
Yeah, Station Eleven was the first of Mandel’s books I read, and I fell in love with her writing!
I forgot about Black Dove White Raven. I really liked that one.
Yes, I was surprised by it. I didn’t expect it to have such depth or cover so much ground. It’s one that definitely had an impact on me!
I’ve read Down Under by Bryson and I fell in love with his writing. I’m slowly making my way through his books. Happy reading! My TTT https://readwithstefani.com/best-reads-of-2024-so-far/
I love his books – that’s one of my favourites for sure (here it’s called In A Sunburned Country but it’s the same book). I hope you continue to enjoy his books!
Experiencing places through books is a lot of fun! Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
Yes, it feels like traveling only without the uncomfortable bits!
I love Under the Tuscan Sun. I have read the first in the Corfu trilogy and enjoyed that as well. I think it made a huge impact on my life, as we now have a billion animals. Not as exotic though of course. Lol. You have so many other good ones – The Salt Path, Bill Bryson! Great list!!
Aw that is so lovely! What kinds of animals do you have? I don’t have a ton of pets, but I do love spending time outside watching the insects and squirrels and birds!
Between Two Kingdoms is a journey that no one should ever have to take, but is so eye-opening about the experiences of those who do take that journey.

As usual, you have found the perfect words for a feeling I had. Yes.
How did I forget the Peter Mayle and the Frances Mayes books? Once upon a time, travel books was my favorite genre, and I read every travel book I ran across. Thank you for your list—I’ve now added a half dozen to my TBR.
I love both of them! I have a soft spot for Under the Tuscan Sun because it’s the book that introduced me to the genre. I’m glad you found a few you are interested in!
I love reading books set in different places to the UK (although sometimes it is nice to read books close to home!)
These look interesting.
Have a great week!
