TOP TEN TUESDAY | CHARACTERS (AND AUTHORS) I’D LIKE TO GO ON VACATION WITH

I’m going to cheat a bit this week because I had a hard time coming up with enough characters to fill a top ten list. But also I kept coming back to wishing I could include some of the writers whose work or interviews have left me feeling like they’d be interesting to have along. Then I figured hey, it’s my blog, I can do what I want. So that’s exactly what I’ve done. Hope you guys don’t mind.

Characters

  1. Anne Shirley from the Anne of Green Gables series
  2. Viv from Legends & Lattes
  3. Frank from The Great Unexpected
  4. Cassandra from I Capture the Castle
  5. The Stevens family from The Fortnight in September

Authors

  1. Sandi Toksvig because she has lived in multiple places, and traveled to even more. She’s also very knowledgeable about history and would likely have interesting facts to share!
  2. Stephen Fry for similar reasons to Sandi Toksvig.
  3. Bill Bryson because he’s been pretty much everywhere, has a knack for finding the most interesting and humorous bits of history and local trivia, and would know all the cool places.
  4. Michael Crichton because I loved his book Travels, and I would have loved to be along on some of his adventures. (Obviously I know he’s no longer with us, but honestly my chances of going on vacation with him are as good as anyone else on this list, so I’m keeping it.)
  5. Frances Mayes because she seems to have an ability to find the beauty in a place, to seek out the essential ingredients of a culture (literally) and find a way to feel at home in a new place.

That’s it for this week! What about you guys? Which characters or authors would  you like to go on vacation with? Are any of mine on your list this week? Any you’d like to steal?

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.

We both picked Viv! Anne Shirley, Sandi Toksvig, and Frances Mayes are all great choices too! I can’t believe I didn’t think of Frances Mayes, but it’s been awhile since I’ve read her books. She always seems to be able to afford the best travel experiences too!

Viv would be a great travel companion! Oh, I haven’t read her in ages either but when I think about travel, she and Bill Bryson usually pop into my head. Though I should have also included Karin Muller who wrote Along the Inca Road which I absolutely loved! Yes, though I enjoyed Under the Tuscan Sun, it felt very removed from my life and experiences. I might get to enjoy hostel vibes, but never renovating a second home in a foreign country. No way I can ever afford that kind of thing! I enjoy reading about it, though. Peter Mayle’s account of fixing up a home in Provence, France and trying to learn how the culture works there is another favourite!

Yeah, I just feel like she’d show me the world in a different light. The things I don’t really notice she’d not only point out, but make beautiful again. It’s kind of like why hanging out with my kid is so wonderful. All the little things that are part of the backdrop of life are suddenly in stark relief when I see it through a kid’s eyes. Whether it’s a roly-poly or a bee or a leaf or some moss. It’s all suddenly fascinating and beautiful!

Yes, every time I read one of his books I wanted to hop on a plane and join him! Anne just has this wonderful way of seeing magic in the world. I think it’s hard to hold onto that, especially when life is hard and starts wearing you down. I think we could all benefit from a bit of Anne’s eye for beauty!

    • RAIN CITY READS says:

Yes, I feel like Anne would see beauty everywhere and find an amazing way to describe it all. I think I would end up seeing the world through her eyes and it would be a wonderful experience! Cassandra… honestly I just wanna get that girl a bit of life. She’s so sheltered and her horizons are so small. I’d love to get her traveling and then read what her journals had to say about it!
