This week’s Top Ten Tuesday on The Broke and the Bookish is: Top Ten Characters I’d Like to Check In With. There are so many, and many more I don’t even remember because I read the books so long ago. There are a couple of embarrassing or just kind of strange choices in here, but these are the ones that popped into my head first, so I decided to roll with it.
Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
I want more about everyone in the Harry Potter world. Anyone. (Except maybe Umbridge.) But if I had to pick just one character of the many, many I came to know and love, it would be Hermione. She is the character I connected with the most, and the character that I most often think about.
Deuce and Fade from the Razorland trilogy by Ann Aguirre
We got a bit of info, but I’d like more detail. I’d like to know the details of how they shape their world and learn to adapt to their new surroundings.
Amy and Nick from Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Yes, they’re horrible. Yes, I want to punch them in the face, but not because they’re cute. But I’m also kind of curious, in a very twisted way, to know what happened!
Park from Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
I loved the character of Park. I loved how sensitive he was, and how he was determined to be who he was and love who he loved, no matter the consequences. I wasn’t ready for his story to end where it did, and I wanted to know more about how his life turned out. (I didn’t care so much about Eleanor though, if I’m honest.)
Pat & Tiffany from The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick
These have to be two of my favourite fictional characters. I loved how they learned to embrace their own imperfections by learning to love the imperfections in one another. I rarely “ship” – but in this case, I make a heartfelt exception.
Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
So you all probably know by now that I’m getting my wish on this one! I still wanted to include it, though, because I’ve wanted more Scout pretty much my whole life. Go Set A Watchman can’t come soon enough for me!
Matilda and Miss Honey from Matilda by Roald Dahl
I know that Matilda’s newfound life let her be more “normal,” but even a more normal version of Matilda is pretty extraordinary. I would love to know what she did with her immense brain – did she grow up to be a doctor? An academic? Did she write books to add to the library she loved so much?
Trixie Belden from the Trixie Belden Series by Kathryn Kenny and Julia Campbell
Our spunky protagonist and her band of amateur detectives were some of my favourites to spend time with growing up, and I’d love to know: did Trixie grow up to break the mold and become one of the first full-fledged female detectives? Did she travel to foreign lands finding adventure at every turn? Or did she mellow and settle down? (I kind of hope not…)
Bella, Edward and the wolves from the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer
I know this is the series we all love to hate, I know it has myriad issues (in terms of feminism, writing and otherwise), but still. I feel like the Volturi aren’t exactly going to just sit back and allow for happily ever after, and I am kind of curious to know what happened in the future. Adventure doesn’t seem to leave these characters alone!
Nobody Owens from The Graveyard Book and Coraline from Coraline by Neil Gaiman
These are two of my favourite middle-grade characters. They’re both kids who have untraditional upbringings, and they’re both kids I wish I could have been friends with them growing up! I would love to know how how they grew up – particularly Nobody (aka Bod), because you’ve got to imagine that being raised by ghosts will make a pretty interesting fella.
Augustus Waters from before his role in The Fault In Our Stars by John Green
It’s possible – okay, probable – that I liked Augustus even better than Hazel Grace. But TFIOS is very much Hazel’s story. So I want more Augustus, and please, oh please, won’t you write us a prequel, John Green?
Did any of these make your list this week? Are there any you think I should have included in my list? Share in the comments!
I had to scroll past so much of this to avoid spoilers! I do agree with you about Gone Girl, I'm so curious to know what happened in the future. The tension at the end of that book just killed me.
Right? I feel like there's no WAY they're going to just roll over and leave the Cullens alone after that.
Don't get me wrong, I love Hazel Grace. But Augustus is just hilarious!
I think so too! Everything about that book was perfect. It was my favourite growing up. I spent more time than I'd care to admit to trying to make things move from across the room….
That book…. that book. Never have I hated and yet been so fascinated by two characters so much in my life. I didn't think about Luna and Neville, but DEFINITELY would love more of their story! Thanks for the follow – going to check your blog out now. (FYI in case you see this, the link didn't work, and your name goes to your G+ page where there's no link to your blog – I had to google to find you. Just so you know in case you're not getting many click backs because people can't find you!!)
This week was HARD. I feel like there are so many characters I want to know the futures of – even ones I didn't like (hence Amy and Nick being on my list). Sometimes just because I hope they got what they deserved!

Yeah, I would love an Augustus book, even if I know how it all turns out… And yes. Totally. Lost count of how many times she saved their asses!
Matilda and Miss Honey! My heart kind of exploded a bit. They are the happiest…I know it.
You know, I completely forgot about the Volturi from Twilight! I always felt like their story wasn't fully resolved and it would be interesting to see what happened afterwards.
And an Augustus Waters prequel would be amazing! I agree that he stole the show for me in TFIOS!
Nick Dunne made my list too! I loved Gone Girl so much, such a twisty novel that I was hooked on from the start 😀 I put Luna on my list, I'd love to know what happened with her and Neville 🙂 I'm a new follower so hiya 🙂
Here's my TTT @ Emma's Bookery if you would like to check it out 🙂

You've got some great choices on your list. I absolutely love Hermione and would love to see what happens next for her. I loved Eleanor & Park too. Such great characters. My TTT
Great picks! A prequel to TFIOS, I would definitely buy that. And I would love a book through Hermoine's eyes. Let's be honest, she is the smartest of the bunch…

I love Pat and Tiffany. This is one of the few situations where I read a book after watching the movie and didn't feel like I had it backwards. The book was a bit more satisfying, though, and it isn't exactly the same. The relationships are developed slightly differently, and some are more prominent in the book which nicely rounds it out. I'd definitely recommend reading it, particularly if you like realistically flawed characters.
Just visited and left my (rather extensive) comment on your post! But yes, all great picks, and who *wouldn't* want more Hogwarts???
Pat and Tiffany! Gosh i should have included them. I love that movie, i regret that i haven't read it yet, poo on me, i need to get to it 🙂
Great list!
My Top Ten 🙂

You have a lot of good picks on your list and a few that made mine. I totally agree with Hermione, Scout, Matilda, and the Wolves from Twilight.
I LOVED Trixie! She was my absolute favourite growing up. I think the reason for the pairings is that what interests me is how those characters interacted with one another – and their stories are contingent on one another. Like with Deuce and Fade or Amy and Nick. (Others I just couldn't pick and got lazy….). But you're right, supporting characters provide the social context in which you learn about a character, without which they'd be rather flat!

I forgot about Trixie! But Nancy Drew is on my list. You've got several couples/pairings. Sometimes it's th people around them that really bring out a character's personality or varied aspects of who they are.
