I am not a huge reading snacker. I tend to stop and take a break to eat. But there are a few things that, if I am going to have something edible nearby, I’m most likely to reach for. First, a few rules.
- It can’t be anything that drips. Nothing worse than sauce on your book.
-
It can’t be something that makes my fingers oily. I hate fingerprints on book covers.
-
It can’t be anything that requires two hands. At least until I can employ someone solely to hold my book for me. Then it’ll be cool.
-
Nothing that starts out too hot. Because then by the time it cools I will have forgotten about it.
-
Nothing sticky. Can’t be tearing pages trying to turn them.
-
Usually nothing healthy. Because reading is a treat, so reading snacks should be too.
The first and most likely thing I am to have nearby is, boringly, water. I rarely drink anything other than water, and I drink a lot of it. But sometimes it’s nice to have something flavourful to sip on. Here are my favourite drinks:
- Peppermint mocha (particularly near Christmas
-
Decaf latte
-
London Fog tea
-
Harney & Sons Vanilla Comoro tea
-
Mexican Hot Chocolate
Some of my favourite nibbles are:
- Triscuits with cheese
-
Licorice Allsorts
-
Granola bars (usually Nature Valley’s Sweet and Salty)
-
Cheese Pizza (nothing with toppings that are going to drop off)
-
Blueberries and slices of apple
So that’s it for this week’s list! Nothing too exciting or original, but hey, it’s the books that matter anyway, right?
Over to you guys! What do you like to sip and savour when you’re reading? Do you have any snack rules to live by?
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
I don’t like messy foods either. It’s why I often avoid chips or popcorn even. Don’t want to get the flavor/butter, etc on the pages.
Triscuits and cheese – totally should have added that to my list this week. 🙂

A good list of what not to eat or drink while reading. I’m a tea drinker too. Is Mexican hot chocolate where you add cinnamon and nutmeg?
The best way to eat Triscuits is with cheese!
OMG yes for Mexican hot chocolate!!!! That’s the best.
Nothing healthy. LOL. That’s so true!
Totally with you about ‘nothing healthy’ coz my list is full of all the unhealthy things! Haha but they’re soo delicious and I’m so bad at resisting temptation 😂 When I eat while reading I also make sure I only use one hand so the other is free to turn the pages and hold the book down without tainting it. Great TTT!
My TTT post
Mexican hot chocolate sounds so good. I’ll have to try it someday.
My TTT.
Cheese pizza is a good choice.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
OK so a peppermint mocha sounds amazing and I’m definitely going to see if my local coffee shop can put one together.
