I’m doing an odd mix of quotes on a couple of topics this week. No rhyme or reason, no real point, just a meander through some that I liked or that I felt I could connect to. So here they are, in no particular order:
Book quotes
“My alma mater was books, a good library… I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.” Malcolm X
“Books are the mirrors of the soul.” – Virginia Woolf
“Some books are so familiar that reading them is like being home again.” – Louisa May Alcott
On Illness
“(On his gravestone): ‘I told you I was ill.'” – Spike Milligan
“Some people are silently struggling with burdens that would break our backs.” – Wayne Gerard Trotman
“Illness is the night side of life, a more onerous citizenship. Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place.” – Susan Sontag
“There’s a remarkable amount of strength residing in those who move forward without being able to physically move. Ones that carry the weight of illness or a disability, they battle wars most know nothing about. They are the true warriors of the world, the ones who have every reason to quit but never do.” – Nikki Rowe
“Trying to show that you have mental illness to somebody who’s never had it is like trying to describe a new color to the colorblind.” – Simmy Kors
“Enemy number one was now the disease. It had a presence as solid as that of a person – I think all serious illnesses do.” – A.P., Sabine
Other quotes I like
“Housework won’t kill you, but then again, why take the chance?” Phyllis Diller
Do you guys have any to add? Which is your favourite literary quote? Did you do a random selection today or did you choose a particular topic?
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
Those quotes in illness are heartbreaking. I am a deacon at my church and we try to tend to the physical and spiritual needs of parishioners. Sometimes we learn that someone has been suffering for a long time without telling anyone. So sad.
Yes, it is a good reminder to me that we can’t ever know what other people are going through, and just because they seem fine on the outside doesn’t mean there aren’t things going on we can’t see. It can be hard to share suffering, especially if you’re worried it might change how people think of you. I’m glad you’re in a position to be able to offer some help and comfort – I think that’s a wonderful thing in today’s world.
Love the quote about housework!
Heehee…
A fascinating collection of quotes! The first three are true, though: books can teach us new things, take us to new places, and feel like home all at the same time!

You summed it up here perfectly! And absolutely correct!
I like that Virginia Woolf quote.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
Yes, it’s a great one!
I love the categories you picked from. Great choices.
Thank you!
“Some books are so familiar that reading them is like being home again.” – Louisa May Alcott
LOVE this one! Great quotes! Happy Tuesday!
I loved it too – it’s completely how I feel when I re-read a favourite book!
I love the Trotman quote. So true! I often find that the people who are truly suffering most are the ones who are doing it in silence rather than those who can’t stop complaining about their lives in person or on social media. It’s a good reminder to treat everyone with kindness since you really never know what is going on in their lives and how much even a small bit of compassion can mean to them.
Happy TTT!

Yes, I completely agree. Going through my own medical issues (though I definitely do NOT suffer in silence, as I don’t do ANYTHING in silence – just ask my husband) has taught me not to assume that just because someone looks young and healthy they are. Or even more than that, to consider that anyone could have things going on that are hard, whether it’s illness or problems or whatever. There’s so much we don’t know about other people’s experiences, and it’s really important to remember that, I think!
The quote from Malcolm X reminds me of the amazing power of books to transform lives. Instead of banning books, we need to get more books to more people, in whatever ways we can.
I 100% agree with you!
Thank you for sharing those quotes on illness. Powerful. I went with recent(ish) Kindle highlights for my list.
Thanks! It’s something I find interesting having dealt with medical issues my entire adult life! I’ll check yours out as well – thanks for the link!
