Let’s face it, 2020 SUCKED. I mean there were moments of joy, some fun making-the-best-of-it interludes, but it’s not one I expect to look back on with particular fondness if I make it to old age. But there were some great books that managed to take me out of it for a bit or teach me something important. So here are my top ten books I read in the past year!
I only read about 30 books this year from start to finish, so while most of these books are definitely top books and would probably be on my best of for the past five years, there are a couple that are on here because the title is “Top Ten.” All the same, they’re all great books, and some of them will stick with me for years to come. (Two I’ve even already re-read!)
Which books on this list have you read? Did you love them? What were some of your best books of the year? And since this is my last post of 2020, let me take this opportunity to say happy new year, and I hope you all have a wonderful (and socially distanced) new year’s eve!
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
I really want to read Good Talk. I can never find a cheap copy when I have money :). Have a great 2021!
If you ever do get a chance, I highly recommend it! Not a difficult text, but lots to think about. Happy new year to you as well!
I did enjoy Good Talk!

I read Red at the Bone and Good Talk and enjoyed both of them! Here’s to more good reading in 2021!
Those were two of my favourites for sure. Both very thought provoking and I loved the writing in Red at the Bone and the combination of imagery and text in Good Talk. Both stuck with me for a long time after finishing. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one!
These look like great books to have read this year!
They were! I might not have read a lot, but quality was right up there!
Aw, I’ve heard such good things about The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse. I really need to read that one.
It’s wonderful. And the good news is that it is a super quick read – an hour or so will do it! So if you have even a little bit of spare time in the new year, I’d highly recommend picking it up and giving it a try!
At Home was a good read.
My post.
Agreed! Though I generally enjoy Bryson’s books. Some of his older ones are a bit cringey in regards to stereotyping and lack of political correctness, but overall I tend to find more to like than not!
Yes, I too have struggled this year to read, I think my reading dropped by about 50%. Though I have been watching a lot of shows, still, it’s not the same.
I just finished The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy too — and it was so warm and lovely and just what the doctor ordered. Wish it were longer, because that art and those quotes!
Happy TTT and hope 2021 will be better all around. Happy new year in advance!
If I’m honest my reading hasn’t really dropped that much except for the last few months! I loved Mackesy – such a beautiful book and so wonderful as a reading experience. Definitely an all time fave!I agree, I could handle about four times as much! Happy new year to you as well!
I have not read any of these … yet. They do look intriguing though!
Some of my favourite books this year were An Anthropologist on Mars, The Mountain Sings, Piranesi (one of the few 2020 releases I read) and Burial Rites.
Wishing you a fruitful 2021, whatever it may bring.
How was Piranesi? I never read Jonathan Strange – I tried, but it was just to heavy to hold and too hard to get into. So I was a bit wary of this one! An Anthropologist on Mars sounds really interesting, I will need to check that one out! Thanks for the mention!
