I’m not much for Halloween. So the idea of a Halloween freebie post isn’t as easy as it might seem on the surface. So I’m doing a bit of a sideways approach. I’m doing some book that are a bit spooky (have supernatural elements), but also some that have a form of magic (or magical realism) in them. This gives me a little more to draw from in my reading experience! I haven’t read all of these – particularly not the spooky ones – but there are a few favourites.
Okay, that’s it for me this week! Can you guys think of any books with supernatural or magical themes? Any that are magical but NOT scary, as I’m definitely too much of a wimp for the former!
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
I’ve not read any of these, but I have heard really great things about TJ Klune.

I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea so much! It was a great autumn read last year!
Thank you for sharing! The Haunting of Hill House is such a great one. Really enjoyed the Netflix series, too.
Have a wonderful week!
Of the scary books I haven’t been able to handle reading I think that’s the one I’m saddest to miss out on. But I know I’d never sleep again!!!
From your list, I’ve read Like Water for Chocolate, but sadly don’t remember much about it.

I enjoyed that one, and the film was pretty good when I watched it (though admittedly that was a while ago now!).
Scary horror isn’t really for me so I will only go as far as Gothic Fiction so I have to add Thriller and Murder Mystery to my lists.
Have a great week!

THAT IS SUCH A GENIUS IDEA!!!! I wish I’d though to include thrillers on my list! I don’t even do gothic fiction, unless it’s very not creepy (I think Rebecca is about it for me). Total wimp here!
Klune and Hendrix are always fantastic. Great picks!
Thanks! Glad you found some favourites on the list!
The Haunting of Hill House was a great pick. I have not read any of the others.
I haven’t read that one – too creepy for me!!
ooo i love magical realism! Have you read The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie by Rachel Linden? It’s really good. And anything by Sarah Addison Allen. My Halloween TTT
Oooooh I have not read either of those! Thank you so much for the recommendations – I’ve added them to my TBR!
Have you seen the tv version of The Haunting of Hill House that came out a few years ago? It was so good.

Oh god no. I’d die! I’m soooooo not able to handle anything creepy!! Which irritates me because I’ve enjoyed a lot of Shirley Jackson’s un-creepy work, and I want more, but what’s left is her creepy stuff and I just know I wouldn’t be able to handle it. So disappointing! I’m pleased to hear the show was good though, as I have a fondness for Shirley Jackson so like that her work is being respected!
I have that Grady Hendrix book sitting on my TBR shelf right now. I’m looking forward to it!
I had some issues with it, but I feel like at least some of them were me and the fact that it was NOT what I expected going into it! I hope you enjoy it!
Under the Whispering Door was so good!
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
I’m so glad to hear that! I feel like I’ve heard some not great reviews, so that’s encouraging!
I listened to the audiobook of Slade House earlier this year and thought it was just the right level of spooky/unsettling for me as I’m also a bit of a wuss.
My Halloween-themed TTT
I started reading it but had this feeling it was not going to go well for me, so I chickened out! I’m have zero stamina for anything creepy!
