TOP TEN TUESDAY | THRILLERS I ENJOYED

I really enjoy a good thriller. I haven’t read as many lately as I would like, but when I find a good one, it’s one of the genres I find easiest to speed through. So here are some of the series and stand-alones I’ve enjoyed most.

Stand-alones I enjoyed:

           

I enjoyed all of these because they surprised me. Two introduced me to unreliable narrators, and the other two showed me the concept of a literary fiction novel with a thriller plotline.

Series I enjoyed:

           

I read Kathy Reichs and Sue Grafton in my late teens and early twenties. Both series I eventually gave up on, mainly because there are just a lot of them and I can only read so much of a series before I get a bit ODed. But I think I’ll probably go back to both at some point. Maisie Dobbs and Mr. Churchill’s Secretary are both set in particular time periods in England that are quaint, and yet they have strong female characters who defied their place in society and refused to be underestimated. Neither was perfect, but both were enjoyable.

       

I zoomed through M.C Beaton’s Agatha Raisin series during the middle of my pregnancy when I couldn’t focus on anything that required brain power, but I wanted to be reading. They were exactly what I needed, and I read one every couple of days for as long as the series lasted. There’s a certain nostalgia associated with it now, so I do usually read the new ones as they come out. The Cuckoo’s Calling and its sequels aren’t perfect. They tend to meander too much, be too long, and repeat information to a tedious degree. But if you’re good with skimming through a bit, they’re worth the work. Elly Griffith’s Ruth Galloway series are another I enjoyed well enough but weren’t perfect. I enjoyed the characters and the concept (the premise is an archaeologist who ends up embroiled in several current mysteries and assists the police in their investigations). It’s one I hadn’t ever come across before, and I enjoyed the novelty.
