WEDNESDAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE | 10 UNUSUAL THINGS ABOUT ME

I have been putting this one off for so long that it’s now overdue! Unusual things about me? Ten?? I don’t think so. I’m a fairly ordinary person in my estimation! Hmmmm. Let’s see what I can come up with.

  1. I have ADHD, which is not at all uncommon, but does lead to some interesting quirks – I’m likely to forget what I came into a room for, but can remember exactly where random items are (usually ones I’ll never need again), for example. It also helps me be pretty silly and easily excited about things I’m interested in! I’d like to think it makes me a fun mom, though I know that the easily frustrated side of me can take away as many points as the silly adds!
  2. I have a bunch of medical issues that affect my day-to-day life, for example I’m having to wear masks to spend time outside right now because the pollen affects my breathing so much. It sucks, but I’d like to think that it increases my enjoyment of the times I do get to be outside without worrying about breathing!
  3. I taught myself to crochet over the last year, and now I enjoy making stuffed toys and household items myself! I grew up knitting, which I also enjoy, but it’s a lot slower and not as easy to learn to make detailed things with, so crochet seems to be a better fit for me.
  4. If I find a food I like I’m perfectly happy to eat the same thing every day for…. well, pretty much indefinitely. I’ve been eating the same thing for breakfast and lunch for years at this point, with small tweaks, and I’m absolutely fine with that.
  5. I can’t drink coffee. Well, I can, but I see no point. It makes me feel unpleasantly jittery and then I get a headache and really tired. At no point do I feel like it’s positively provided energy or alertness. It’s one bad effect to another. I used to think it was an emperor’s new clothes situation, where everyone thought they were supposed to find it useful so they said they did. Now I think maybe it’s at least partly a brain chemistry thing. Or are you all in on a huge hoax????
  6. I don’t like meat. Yes, I know, it’s delicious (apparently) and adds texture and variety to meals. It’s got all sorts of things in it that bodies need – protein, iron, B12. But I just do not like it. I can’t swallow it, partly because I think about where it came from and that turns me off, but also I don’t enjoy the texture of flavour at all. It’s not a moral thing, though I do like animals and am not a huge fan of killing them, but I understand that killing animals for consumption is part of nature and as long as it’s done responsibly, as humanely as possible, and respectfully I can accept that. I just do not enjoy it. I wish I did – it can be so hard finding food, especially while traveling, and apparently I’m missing out on a lot – but it just grosses me out, and there’s nothing that can be done about it. I’ve never had bacon or a steak, and I never want to. On the plus side, more for the rest of you!
  7. I prefer my chocolate with salt. In general, I prefer most things with salt.
  8. I don’t like summer weather. There’s the health stuff – pollen, more chance of wildfire smoke, susceptibility to heat exhaustion – but also I just find them too bright. I like it when the sun is out, don’t get me wrong, it’s a huge boost to mood, I just don’t want to go and lounge about in it. I tolerate it in order to garden because I do love seeing things grow. But if I could have a thriving garden without the temperature ever passing 24 degrees Celsius, I’d be perfectly happy with that.
  9. Similarly, I dislike swimming. I don’t like tight things on my body, so already swimsuits are a nightmare. But I also don’t like being wet and cold, which seems to be a large part of the swimming experience.
  10. I only just started driving. And I didn’t want to. I only did it so I can drive my kid to school so we aren’t required to switch schools yet, otherwise I would have tried to squeak by without ever doing it. I’m terrible at it, particularly parking.

That’s about all I can think of! Not sure how unusual or interesting any of that is, but it’s all I can come up with!

I don’t like meat either. I’ve been a vegetarian since childhood, and while now, I choose to be for ethical reasons, meat has always just felt all kinds of wrong in my mouth.

Yeah! I ate it when I was a kid, but even then it was things like ham or spaghetti bolognese (NOT meatballs) or a burger with lots and lots of other stuff on it. So never really just a big bite of meat on its own. Hated the texture and the taste unless it was disguised! I don’t even like most meat substitutes, particularly the ones that try to be as close to meat as possible. I don’t want close to meat! Haven’t had red meat in…. oh, decades now!
