I used to like musicals when I was a kid, but that was partly because a neighbour had quite a few that I could borrow, and since we didn’t have TV anything I could watch on video was going to get me to watch it. Repeatedly. I watched some Barbara Streisand ones like Hello Dolly and Funny Girl. I didn’t really like The Sound of Music, but I watched it. Since growing up and gaining access to a wider range of entertainment options, however, musicals have not been my favourite with one exception – I loved Avenue Q. My husband took me to see it and it was a fun show with lots of irreverent and hilarious content that made me laugh – something musicals don’t normally do. The only other one I think I’d go to willingly without some outside motivation would be Wicked, mostly because I’ve heard the music isn’t bad.
What about you guys? Any others out there who don’t really love musicals that much as a genre, but maybe have a couple that they do enjoy? Any other Avenue Q fans out there?
