These days I don’t have that many auto-buy authors. But there are a couple. The first is Isabel Allende. I haven’t read the last few books of hers, but I have them on my shelf anyway and definitely want to get to them. She’s a favourite author of mine, and someone I admire. Last year I also read a book by Ibram X. Kendi, and he is now definitely not only an auto-buy author, but someone whose work I’ll consume in whatever format (I’ve been listening to his podcast and read The 1619 Project this year in which he has a piece). Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt are two other authors whose books I have loved in the last few years, and I’ve bought everything they’ve each written (I haven’t read all of them yet as I like to have something to look forward to). And for YA, I think the only true auto-buy is Angie Thomas, as so far I have purchased all the books she has published and read them all, too! And finally, Jenny Lawson. I adore her memoirs – they always have the perfect balance of serious subject matter, gut-stitching humour and unbelievable anecdotes.
In addition to these there are some authors whose new releases I will always check out, but might not always buy. A few of these are Emily St. John Mandel, John Irving, John Green, Andy Weir, T.J. Klune, Aminatta Forna, Frances Mayes, Bob Joseph, Peter Mayle, Bernardine Evaristo, Emanuel Acho, Amanda Craig, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Thomas King and Akala.
Some authors who, to the best of my knowledge haven’t published anything else yet but whose next book I’ll be looking out for are Reni Eddo-Lodge, Tommy Orange and Desmond Cole.
There are a few authors who, if there were still alive, would be auto-buy: Helene Hanff, Sue Townsend, Roald Dahl, Dodie Smith, and James Herriott, to name just a few. I’ll be forever sad that there will be no new books to read from them!
That’s it for me this week! What about you guys? Do you have any auto-buy authors, and are any of them on my lists?
