This week’s prompt is basically the best of last year. Books are easy, but I didn’t really keep track of which movies and TV shows I watched actually came out last year, so it’s a bit more of a challenge!
Best books:
I have a whole post about the best books I read in 2021, which you can read here.
Best movies:
I loved
Death to 2020, mostly because it gave me a chance to laugh at a fucking awful year. (Little did I know 2021 wouldn’t be all that much better, and so far 2022 seems set to blow them both out of the water, sh
t show wise.) Don’t Look Up is a social satire that aims straight at society’s desire to ignore what’s happening rather than try to deal with it. *Ahem leadership of my province right now saying we don’t need to do testing or proper quarantining or add any measures to schools and that COVID is just endemic now (it isn’t).
Free Guy… well, it wasn’t great cinema. It wasn’t even the best action movie. Definitely not the best Ryan Reynolds. But you know what? I enjoyed it. Good enough.
Best TV shows:
Both of these are fairly heavy, but they’re so fucking good. Both gave me a ton to think about, a lot of vital perspective, and a chance to understand experiences different from my own. Always things I look for. You should watch both of them, if you haven’t already!
That was 2021 for me! What about you guys? Which were your favourites of the year? Have you seen any of these?

I’ve heard that Free Guy wasn’t great, and yet I still want to watch it. Probably because of Ryan Reynolds.
Well, I mean, it wasn’t great. At all. It was just light entertainment and a fast moving plot that was totally ridiculous and in no way actually a valuable use of time! Great for pandemic, though. (And yes, Ryan Reynolds.)
I’ve heard wonderful things about Maid, Death to 2020, and Don’t Look Up. I’ll look up the other films you mentioned, too. I hadn’t heard of them yet. 🙂
Oh those were so good! I just watched Death to 2021… it wasn’t up to the original is all I’ll say! Maid is a lot, so be aware it’s one that takes some effort, and if you’re in a similar political camp to myself Don’t Look Up is very anger-inducing, but a great take on our times!
