I actually wrote a whole post about this last year, because there were several books I read in 2022 that really did surprise me. I’ll share a couple of my top picks below, though, in case you don’t want to click over:
Both of these had difficult main characters, but both managed to completely win me over and pull me in. I loved that the characters are flawed, but also so incredibly loveable. I loved Ove’s character development throughout the book, and I loved Cara’s vibrant personality and refusal to take anything too seriously. They were both capable of great love and caring, but seemed prickly or hard on the outside to those who didn’t know them. I can relate.

Yes; I’d thought Iris Yang had killed off a character in her Tigers Trilogy, but volume three is about how the character survived and had a long adventurous life without reconnecting with the others until…well, it’s an interesting read. Communist China under Mao and Deng.
I’ve not read those books, but I love it when a character is properly developed, it makes them seem believable, which is what I want from my fiction.
