Okay, so this is definitely an area where I’ve got a lot of experience. Historically, between mental health, physical illness/pain and just, you know, life, I’ve had a fair few of them. And dealing with them by watching films is definitely a thing I have been known to do. So here are some that I love that hit in various ways – funny, quirky, nostalgic, people killing each other so suddenly your life seems better, the whole shebang.
- Amelie – my all time favourite movie.
- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
- The Jane Austen Book Club
- Calendar Girls
- Saving Grace
- The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
- 84, Charing Cross Road
- Under the Tuscan Sun
- Remember the Titans
- The Hangover
- Any action movie with lots of shooting and a decent plot
- It’s not a film, but I just binged the entire first season of The Night Agent and it definitely kept me fully immersed and not thinking about crappy life stuff!
I know there are more, mostly old ones, but those are the ones that come to mind. I don’t actually watch that many movies these days, I mostly watch TV these days, so this was a harder one for me! What about you guys? Do you enjoy any of the movies on my list? Which one do you watch when you’re having a bad day?

I don’t think I’ve watched any of those, but I know I’ve heard great things about some of them, especially “Amelie.”
Ooooh, Amelie is just delightful. It’s a quiet movie about not much, but it’s so sweet and lovely! I hope you do manage to get to it at some point if that sounds like your cup of tea!
Under the Tuscan Sun is such a good one. I haven’t seen it in FOREVER. I also had Remember the Titans on my list. Thanks for sharing.
I need to rewatch it as well! It’s a funny thing, I don’t much care for American Football, but there are several films about the sport that I’m oddly fond of!
Remember the Titans has some GREAT music. I remember enjoying The Jane Austen Bookclub, though when I watched it I’d only read one or two of Austen. The sole male character was amusing.
You’re so right! The Jane Austen Book Club isn’t a perfect film, neither are the characters, but there’s something about it that I really liked. Maybe it’s the diversity of characters – in terms of lives, ages, personalities – or maybe it’s just the way books manage to interact with their lives and draw them together. Whatever it is, though it’s a bit sappy and overwrought at times, I do like it!
Some great choices. I’ve just started The Night Agent and it’s gripping so far.
Ooooh I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Under the Tuscan Sun is a wonderful feel good movie.
It certainly is! And the Tuscan landscape. I adore it, though I’ve never been. Top of my travel wish list!
Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Amelie are the two I’m most familiar with here, but this is a really excellent list.
Thanks! I loved the whimsy and creativity of Amelie, plus as a bit of an antisocial person who still does want some real connections (if only a few), I felt very strongly connected with the character. And Best Exotic Marigold is just so full of hope and life, and I love when older people are still protagonists in stories. I hate the way they are shuffled aside in society rather than being valued for their experience and knowledge. And I like when they are still allowed to have adventures! Plus, I mean, Dame Judi Dench. Need I say more??
