Well this one should be easy – I don’t. I have zero recollection of the first time I sat down at a computer to logon to the internet, and no clue at all whatsoever what I was doing on it when I did. Now, in my defense, I’m not exactly a kid. We’re talking like a few decades ago. And I imagine it was in school, because I was around at the beginning of the internet when we didn’t have computers at home yet, so all we did with them was in the computer lab at school where we basically did what we were told.
Now, when I actually started using the internet, mostly I used it to check my hotmail account (remember those?) and later to chat on MSN messenger. Thrilling, I know. I’m not enjoying how much this post dates me. I asked the husband what his first website was, and being even older than me, he likewise had no idea, but said, “AOL, maybe?” so let’s go with that, because it sounds like a legit guess.
For those of you who are younger, do you actually remember your first foray online? Was it on your own or as part of school? Which were the first websites you visited regularly on your own without parental supervision? I’m curious what it’s like nowadays for you kids. Ha.

My first experience online was in ’96 when I spent the night with my best friend and he dialed into some kind of chatroom that had very primitive fantasy graphics. I say ‘dialed in’ deliberately because I don’t think this was the web browser-accessible internet. The first time I saw The Internet was at my neighbor’s house in ’98 or ’99, and we accessed Yahoo to chat with people. When I got online myself (using one of those free ISPs like NetZero), I went to the sort of places you’d expect a kid to go — to yahoo chatrooms and to websites connected to books and video games.
We’re all about the same. I was so glad to get rid of AOL
Same! Even older, because I was married with kids before we were able to get online the first time.
I remember Hotmail! I remember AOL too. We used to get those free ’30 day trial’ CDs that they used to have at the checkouts in supermarkets. That’s going back a while!
I don’t remember my first forays online, but I do know it was on our home computer in the late 90’s. And I remember going on Ask Jeeves at school.
