I’m not going to take this prompt literally, because if I did the entire list would be medicines that I literally can’t live without, my kid, and maybe food and water, and man that would be a boring list (other than my kid, of course, who is the best). So let’s try to find some fun answers.
- Chocolate. I know, I know, this is a book blog, so you’d think the first item on my list would be books, right? They’re high up there, but even on the days I don’t read a thing, I eat chocolate. I don’t drink coffee or pop, and I only drink tea occasionally and usually decaffeinated, so most days chocolate is what keeps me vertical., let alone in motion.
- Books, because of course books. In any format. I love proper books, but lately I’ve been doing a lot of my reading as audiobooks because it allows me to read while doing housework and cooking, which is often the only significant “me” time I get in a day.
- Alone time. Okay, so this isn’t a “thing” exactly. But it’s so important to me that it needs a spot on the list. I’m one of those people who can be very social, but it takes a lot out of me. This is actually one of the hardest parts of being a mom, particularly in pandemic times. The only time I can properly disconnect from everything and go into what I’m doing in my head is after my kid is asleep, but then once all the chores are done, it’s pretty much bedtime. So I’m constantly feeling a bit socially over-extended.
- Hobbies. It can be knitting, baking, gardening, doing crafts with my kid, blogging – it doesn’t matter, but I need projects that I can focus on and lose myself in, and they need to produce something that feels like an accomplishment.
- Lavender-scented things. And citrus. I am sensitive to pretty much everything, so scented cleaners, laundry detergents and perfumes are definitely out. But some scents, if they’re natural, are lovely. My favourite things at the moment are The Green Beaver Company’s lavender baby lotion (which I use as hand cream at bedtime) and the Origins GinZing facial scrub that smells like tangy fresh oranges. They’re small things, but using citrus facewash wakes me up in the morning, and going to sleep with the scent of lavender helps me relax.
What about you guys? What can’t you live without (other than books, of course!)?

I looove fresh citrus smells. It’s a scent that really boosts your mood, doesn’t it? 🙂
It does! It makes me feel a bit less like I’m a zombie. Which is me basically every single time I am forced to wake up!
I love citrus-scented things, too.
I love my citrus face wash. It’s one of the only things I don’t hate about waking up!
Hobbies is a good one, too. I like it!
🙂
I agree on the lavender. I absolutely love it.
I’m trying to grow more from cuttings because the seeds are crazy expensive, and I have yet to actually have one germinate! I would love to have an entire patio just full of lavender. Maybe one day!
What wonderful things you have on your list. My business partner would definitely agree with your “alone time” … she doesn’t get near enough of it! And my youngest daughter is like you re: fragrances. I’ll have to let her know about those! My post is here if you want to come by http://jhthomas.blogspot.com/2021/07/wednesday-weekly-blogging-challenge_01963498070.html
Yeah, alone time is one of those things that is so precious and vital. I love spending so much time with my kid, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything, but that is definitely a trade off. I find that overly floral fragrances are the hardest – things like lilies. Flowers like rose and lavender that have less of that powdery, intense floral scent are fine for me, and lavender actually makes me feel more relaxed! But I imagine it’s probably different for everyone. I would say that artificial fragrances are a little harder for me!
We have a lot in common!
I need my alone time, too. It’s crucial for some of us.

Completely. For everyone’s benefit. I become very grumpy and impatient without it!
