I’m not really one for dreaming about inventing stuff. I probably should be – my Dad is a very talented Industrial Designer who has designed pretty much everything at some point – but I don’t seem to have inherited much of those genes. There are lots of useful things that would be great. A self-driving car with an off the charts safety rating (I’m terrified of driving in the city). A robot that could clean the house and empty the dishwasher. Or one that could fold the laundry because damn is that a horrible job. But there is one thing I’d like more than anything else.
Given my recent conversion to almost entirely reading in audiobook format, this one’s an easy one for me. I wish someone would invent a gadget that could read books aloud for me. Not one I’d have to sit and scan across the page one line at a time, but one I could just put on a book, maybe it could flip the pages itself and scan, and just read aloud to me without me needing to do anything. I have a lot of books I want to read as audiobooks, but I already have them in paper format. I will get books in more than one format if they’re really cheap in one or the other and I think I’m going to want to read them more than once, but usually I’ll just borrow the audiobook from the library if I already own the physical book. But my library is limited in its digital selection (don’t get me wrong, it still has a LOT), and often has long wait times for more popular titles. So I’d love a gadget that could just convert any text I wanted to an audiobook seamlessly and with human-sounding narration and read it to me while I’m busy doing boring stuff. That would be absolutely fantastic.
What about you guys? Are there any gadgets you’d love to invent or have invented for you?

I like this idea, but we’d need some better voice programs first. The ones I’ve heard sound terrible.
Yeah, that’s one of the things some genius would need to come up with! But if they did….Heaven.
It would be so cool to have books read aloud like that!
Funnily enough, I love folding laundry…especially little things like socks or face cloths.
I hate scrubbing floors, so a machine that could do that thoroughly would be fantastic. Haha.
I feel like I just can’t love housework. I love the feeling once it’s done and I get to stand back and enjoy my work, but actually DOING it is horrid. Even folding laundry, I’m afraid! I don’t hate cooking as much, but it’s still not something I get excited about.
I hear you on the self-cleaning things! I love your idea about a read aloud gadget…maybe one day. My post is here if you want to stop by: http://jhthomas.blogspot.com/2021/09/wednesday-weekly-blogging-challenge_0212196404.html
I know that compared to even 75 years ago we basically do have self cleaning things – dishwashers, clothes washers, dryers, vacuums. It just seems like there’s always still so much to do! I would be in heaven if I had a wonderful gadget to read my books aloud to me while I worked…
