WEDNESDAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE | MY BOOKCASE

I laughed when I saw this prompt. That would be a huge post, and that’s not even accounting for the fact that most of my bookcases are double stacked. That is so not happening. So I’ve taken a photo of one, the one that my Dad and I made together when I was in my teens I think, and that I’ve found creative ways to stack now that I rarely have mass market copies of books. It’s also double stacked, so there are twice as many books on it as you actually see. Of course. I have five and a half more bookcases scattered around the house, as well as random surfaces with books stacked on them (dresser, bedside table, coffee table with shelf, desk, etc.). There are just a few books in my house…

So that’s my bookcase. What about you guys? How many do you have? Are they full (or double stacked)? Have your books spilled out onto other areas? Or are you strict about cycling out old before bringing in new? Do you have more books you’ve read or have yet to read on your shelves? Do you have criteria for when to hold on to a book (star rating, classic or potential classic status, whether you’re likely to ever read it again)? Share your thoughts!

re: books that fit vs. books in stacks. I SO understand! re: books I keep…. on my shelves, some are series (I love collecting series…. some I’ve read them all, others I’m looking forward to the day when I have the time to binge read the series), many are autographed copies (those I keep forever), and still others are some that I just really enjoy. Believe it or now, I really have purged a lot of them. So the ones I have kept, I keep for a reason. I also do HQ’s suspense readers service, so every month or so I get 4 or 5 new paperbacks. Unless I have fallen in love with the characters and want to keep reading the series, once I finish one, it goes in a bag to take down to our place in Florida …there’s a little library outside the post office and a lot of retirees on fixed incomes.

I have several series on other shelves myself! I also collect certain editions – Everyman’s Classics, the Penguin Clothbound collection and Virago Modern Classic designer editions, to name a few. I love when there’s a whole row of books that match. So satisfying! Do you go out of your way to make sure your series editions match (same series of covers, all hardcover or paperback) or do you just get whatever you come across? I’m one who has a hard time if I’ve got a trilogy where one is paperback and the others are hardcover. It just doesn’t fit! Lol! That’s lovely that you take books to stock a little free library for the pensioners. Reading is such a wonderful thing, particularly, I imagine, for older people who may not be in the best of health (something I’ve had some unfortunate experience with). That ability to lose yourself somewhere else for a while is priceless. I bet they really appreciate you!
