I don’t know that many myths or legends from my area, but I do know there are a lot of them because we live on the unceded land of multiple first nations, including the Squamish (or Skwxwúʔmesh). One of their legends that I’ve heard about is of The Two Sisters (or Twin Sisters) – a set of mountains in North Vancouver. The myth is, I believe, that the two mountains were sisters who held a feast for warring tribes that brokered peace between them. I only know about them because my kid spends a lot of time in the forests here and comes home to share what has been learned. I like this one, though, because it makes the mountains that stand over my home feel friendly and familiar in a way.
I know there are so many more wonderful and rich stories that are part of the land I live on, and I used to know more of them. This one is a personal one, though.
What about you guys? Are there any legends or myths from the area you live in that you love? Any that have changed the way you feel about where you live?
